We are approaching the intersection, and I am moving from the right lane to the middle lane. My wife is concerned.
- Why did you move?
- Because I will have to wait for the green light, and if the car behind me is turning to the right, the driver will not have to wait. In Florida they can make a right turn on red light.
The car that followed behind did not turn and is waiting for a green light. My wife laughs.
- You see, he did not move, and he is not turning.
She is right. How many times I am standing behind a car waiting for a green signal to go straight, while the left lane is empty. And I have to stay in the lane and wait for the driver to let me make a right turn. I have my turn light on, and even if the driver would move one foot to the left, I could go… but it does not even occur to the driver.
Not that they do not see me. They see, but it just does not register. There is a barrier between the eyes and the brain. It does not get to the brain. They can’t comprehend a simple notion that we are not alone, and that it really would be nice to be considerate.
Are they one dimensional people? Because if you gently honk, they are totally puzzled. They look around and they can’t understand what the heck I want.
The trick is that they are not doing anything wrong. They are simply inconsiderate, but not wrong. They can be in that lane, it is not “right turn only”, they do not have to move to the left on a highway approaching a ramp making it easier for the cars to enter, they do not need to brake and let a huge truck to make a turn…
We all have the right to insist on being right… or to be considerate to others. It is the choice that we make.
It is who we are.
