A New Way to Vote in Rockland County

There's a new way to vote in Rockland County, NY.  The primaries in September were our first introduction to the new system.  Personally, I preferred the old method but then, it takes time to acclimate to change.  The plan is to implement this new system state-wide.  The advantage is that the count is immediate, but  I found the new method less private and not very "green"  (all that paper wasted!).  But again, it takes time to acclimate to change.

If you didn't vote in the primaries, check out this video for a preview of the new system.

By the way, if you've moved recently, you may need to re-register. You can register in person at the board of elections until October 22. If you plan on voting by mail make sure it's postmarked by midnight, October 8, so that it can be received no later than October 13.  The deadline for Change of Address notices is also October 13.

For Registration forms call 1-800-FOR-VOTE.

Leah:

The new system is also being implemented over the border here in Orange County as well.  Thanks for the reminder and the info on registering and I would like to add that any college student who are away from home may still be able to request an absentee ballot.  My daughter just sent hers in.  She just turned 18 and she is very excited about having the ability to vote in the upcoming election.

Noreen, it will be implemented thruout the state though I'm not sure of the timeframe.

Leah: I am a little scared of some of the newer methods. If I get out there to vote, I really want to be 1000% certain that my vote is counted. How well have new methods been tested? I agree with you in your opinions about what's going on in your county.

Melissa - the method supposedly has been tested and is supposed to be an improvement.  I wasn't too concerned about it being counted properly (there's someone at the scanner to help make sure it gets inputted properly, hence counted) but more about time, convenience and privacy plus going from paperless to paper seems to me to be a backwards move.
