Tamarack

Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia  comprises a warmly decorated retail store, working studios for resident artisans, a fine art gallery, a theater, and A Taste of West Virginia food court, managed by The Greenbrier. Tamarack is located off of I-77, Beckley, West Virginia, and welcomes half a million visitors annually as a one-stop shop for West Virginia culture, heritage, handcrafts, fine art, regional cuisine and music.  Tamarack is how you will see and treasure West Virginia.

Tamarack

For the month of October, Tamarack knitted two events together — literally.   American Craft Week began on October 1, the day that also ushered in Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In an effort to raise awareness, a group of women from Fayette County in January 2010 started the 'Scarf It' project........The World's Largest Pink Ribbon Scarf.  The scarf is in memory of Terri Lynne Treadway Massey.  When Terri lost a courageous four-year battle with breast cancer at the age of 41, her friends and family helped her find peace by making a promise.   That pledge — to take care of her three children — has inspired a scholarship fund to ensure that her children, and other children who’ve lost a parent to breast cancer, will go to college.

Supporters of Terri’s Tribute, a scholarship fund for the children of Terri Massey and other children who’ve lost moms to breast cancer, are knitting the world’s longest pink ribbon scarf to honor and memorialize the survivors and victims in breast cancer.

The “World's Largest Pink Ribbon Scarf” is being assembled at Tamarack. To date, Tamarack has over 2228 feet, nearly 90 women and one man from 15 states have contributed to the scarf.  The goal is to have a half mile of scarf completed by October 29.  There are still pink yarn pieces being knitted and crocheted and will continued to be collected at Tamarack.

At Tamarack during October, volunteers may add to the scarf by working on it while they visit or by taking home instructions and sending in pieces as they finish.  Tamarack provides classes for knitting or crocheting. Cindy Whitlock, Director of Marketing  said, “We have pink acrylic yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks, but people are welcome to bring their own, or donate to our collection. Many people may want to start their work here and take it with them.  Pieces may be dropped off at Tamarack daily from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and will be added onto the existing scarf.

Scarf Instructions:

Use 100 percent acrylic yarn in any shade of pink.

To knit:

Size 13 needles, Cast on 25 stitches, Knit every row until the end of the skein.  Bind off all stitches and knot the end.

To crochet:

Size G hook, 25 loops, Single crochet one row

“We expect about 39,000 guests from 25 different states and Canada during October.   We’re working on national media coverage and authentication by Guinness. However, the scarf stands on its own merit, a record-sized depiction of love, inspiration and hope for all our sisters,” said Whitlock.

To volunteer to help at Tamarack, call Amy Ellis at 304.256.6843 or email services@tamarackwv.com.

For details about donations, call or stop by FCNB locations in Fayetteville, Oak Hill or Ansted. Donations may be mailed to Terri’s Tribute, FCNB, P.O. Box 209, Fayetteville, WV, 25901.

Upcoming events to help further the fund will be promoted through local media and Facebook.  Anyone with questions can write to terristribute@yahoo.com

Kay Bess, Marketing Director for the Southern WV Convention and Visitor's Bureau said, "Regardless of the quality of the workmanship, every piece received is being melded into the whole scarf, regardless of dropped stitches or mistakes in the knitting.  This isn’t about how perfectly we can knit or crochet, this is about our love of Terri and other sisters, moms, friends and family members who’ve fought breast cancer and those who will fight it in the future."

Rebecca, I think this is the best AR post I've read all month...and how fitting since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! I loved seeing your slideshow and reading the heartwarming story about how the idea for the World's Longest Pink Ribbon Scarf came about. I'm going to suggest this immmediately and then re-blog it! :)

Leilani

P.S. Regrettably, I do not know how to knit or crochet...

Rebecca, What a great post for Tamarack.  If I am ever in WV I will be sure to stop there.  My Mother passed away in 1979 from breast cancer at a very young age.  It is amazing to me how far they have come in treating breast cancer over the years. Thanks for keeping the awareness alive in your post.

Hi Rebecca -- What a fun place.  I couldn't help but click through to a big pic of your profile pic -- I have a chocolate lab and that one of yours is a beauty.  Labs have the most kindest eyes and gentle expression -- never ceases to melt my heart and make me smile when I see one! :))))))
