Beach Clean-Up in Ocean City, New Jersey

With the colder fall days slowly starting to arrive in our little barrier island, it means the "Ocean City Beach Sweep," the 25th annual, has just been completed.  Community efforts going up and down the entire beach area results in an extensive picking up of trash and non-beach items.  "It's a feel-good thing," say some of the participants.  It was started in 1985 and has resulted in an ongoing successful effort to keep the beach looking the way you expect a beach to be.  As some of the participants indicate in a recent article in THE PRESS of Atlantic City (Hometown) - October 27, 2010, "it is more than just a clean-up ... it's also about collecting data.  Data cards were given out to each team so they could track what trash and how much of it they picked up during the 3.5 hour sweep.

So once again the beach is ready for the winter wear ... a time for walking on the beach, watching the birds come back and take over its supervision.  If you haven't spent any time on the beach during the winter months, my recommendation would be to take a day and visit.  I personally enjoy walking the beach in the late afternoon sunshine and often wind, catching the birds moving in and out of the water, often in the rain or snow.  It's all about the changing seasons here in Ocean City, New Jersey.                            dap
