QUEEN ZENYATTA DETHRONED ... BLAME NOT TO BLAME...TUCSON REAL ESTATE
Horse Racing's all time top female money winner didn't get the fairy book ending millions (yes, millions) of her fans were hoping for. She lost her last race!
19 times she had gone postward and 19 times she came back a winner. The 20th start would be her undoing. Now she's 19 wins and one second place, by a nose.
Queen Z came from dead last, 20 lengths behind at one point in the race, against the best the world had to offer this past Saturday, in the Breeders Cup Classic horse race. She missed winning by a nose and retiring undefeated in her entire career.
The racing gods do not often like perfection, of any sort. Secretariat lost. Man O'War lost. Cigar lost. Seabiscuit lost. Citation lost. War Admiral lost. Affirmed lost.
None of the few Triple Crown winners we have had went unbeaten.
Now Zenyatta falls victim to the whims of bad racing "luck" and a less than stellar ride by her Hall of Fame jockey, Mike Smith. In tears after the race, he admitted to several errors in his ride.
In spite of all the mid race problems, when she finally was able to get clear, she came flying down the home stretch, catching and passing all but one horse, ironically named Blame, and losing to Blame by a nose. A stride past the wire and she was in front. A short nose.
Blame was ridden by my favorite jockey, Garrett Gomez, a native Tucsonan to boot. Even he was sorry that Lady Z didn't win. Talk about irony.
Yes, it was just a horse race. At least to those non fans of thoroughbred racing.
But I know that, in my lifetime at least, there will never be another like her. Wonders like Zenyatta are few and far between.
She retires as the top money winning female race horse of all time.
