The annual Christmas Art Show of the Watauga Valley Art League will open on Sunday, November 28 at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area. There will be a "meet-the-artist" reception that day, and the art works will stay on display until January 4, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 Monday-Saturday and 1:30-4:30 on Sundays. About forty artists in the WVAL are participating.
The reception will also feature harp music by Jaime Johnson. (See www.songoftheharp.com for more about the musician.)
Also on display during this time are about 20 live Christmas trees, with thematic decorations by various local groups. I've especially enjoyed the trees that feature quilted ornaments, and there are many other very creatively decorated trees. I always take myi camera to inspire me to go home and make something pretty, or for a photo to send to an artist along with my note of appreciation for what they contributed to the show.
The show was on my "must make time for" list one year but I hadn't got around to it yet when I was driving by with a buyer. We'd finished our day's houses and I asked if she had time to stop for some fun. We made a quick tour to see what we were most interested in, since there wasn't a lot of time. I was delighted when she said that what really appealed to her were the small paintings by my friend, Bill Cruikshank. She bought a couple and I made my three daughters happy that Christmas, with one for myself, of course.
