Speaker: Chuck Liebelt Chuck is a volunteer docent at the Bowers Museum and let us know that the museum is one of Orange County's Hidden Treasures. The museum had its inception in 1924 when Charles Bowers an OC land developer established the trust to build the museum to preserve OC history. The construction began in 1931 for a cost of $54, 080 and utilized workers from the WPA project. It was modeled to look like the Mission at San Juan Capistrano. Construction was completed in 1934, but there was no money available for interior display cases and the opening was delayed until 1936. A major renovation and expansion was completed between 1988 and 1992 necessitating the closure of the museum. During this period a speaker's bureau was created to keep the public enthused about the museum. The museum reopened in 1992 rechristened as the Bowers Museum of Cultural Art and expanding the scope of the exhibitions from local to global. A more recent 30,000 square foot expansion was completed in 2006 doubling the size of the exhibition space. This includes the 300 seat, state of the art, Norma Kershaw Auditorium and an exhibition hall that can be used for banquets seating 350 people. Permanent exhibitions include: Missions and Ranchos, First Californians, Vision of the Shamen, Song of the Priest and Art of Adornment: Tribal Beauty. The next visiting exhibit is Ben Franklin beginning on December 18th and running through March 13th 2011. Group tours are available between the hours of 10 AM to 4 PM. Chuck showed a number of photos depicting items in the exhibitions as well as photos of the buildings, exhibit halls, auditorium and surrounding grounds. Could be a good site for a fundraiser or just a good group tour.
