What does your GPS tell thieves?

Reading Todd Clarks post about the Iphone made me think of some other safety issues

http://activerain.com/blogsview/1980935/did-you-know-your-iphone-can-help-get-you-robbed-my-past-clients-didn-t-until-now-

Did you know what your GPS tells a thief?  Do you realize that if your vehicle is stolen, the information in the vehicle helps a thief?

Example:

You are enjoying the local high school football game.  Your car is either broken into or stolen.  What is in the car to help a thief?

Your insurance identication cards have your name and sometimes every vehicle that you own listed with your address.

The garage remote will open your garage door for the thief to gain entry to the house.  If you don't lock the door from the house to the garage, easy entry.

Your GPS?   Enter "GO HOME" and it will give the thief the easiest route to get to your home.

So while you are enjoying the game, the thief has your address, your garage door opener and the amount of time you will be away from home.

One suggestion for the "Go Home" feature is to key in a business address close to your home.   Now the insurance card and garage door opener are  a different problem.   Open for ideas and suggestions for safety.

Wow! Never thought about it that way.  I use my GPS on my phone, but that seems even more dangerous! Thanks for opening up my eyes.

I never thought about that either. Scary how technology can both help and hurt us at the same time.

Jacqueline & Michael,

It is scary to think about.  The conveniences of life can also be a hazard.  Do I want to get rid of my garage opener?  NO way.

I NEVER leave my GPS hanging on my windshield though.  Too dangerous.  I had always considered it an open invitation to rob me but had  never thought about the information in it.

I had friends go to the movies; they stashed their purses under the seat & came back to a vandalized vehicle.

Wonder what else we use that has our information that we are not aware of?

Here in California we’re required to keep proof of insurance in our car. It, of course, has all the information that a thief would need to cause havoc in our lives.

That is true for Texas also. Our ID cards not only have our names and addresses but EVERY driver on your policy.  Which is good for the police but not good if you are robbed.

One time my daughter locked the keys in the car and when I called roadside assist, they would not open the car unless I could provide proof to the locksmith that I owned the car PRIOR to him unlocking it.  I kept telling the dispactcher, I can provide proof of insurance in my name once the car is unlocked but she would not even dispatch someone to open the car.  IS that NUTS?
