Oh Christmas Tree!

A huge part of the whole Christmas ritual is the tree, and this year we got a big one!

It's easy to head for American Plant Food or a lot run by your favorite school, church or scout group.  Or you could climg up  into the attic to find the artificial tree you pull down each year.  But no, not for me!

Most years, I head for an area tree farm to cut down a fresh tree.

So last Sunday, after doing a little checking on PickYourOwnChristmasTree.org, we headed out to St. Mary County to the Basford Creek Tree Farm in Chaptico, Maryland.  OK, it was a hike - we drove a total of over a hundred miles to get there and back, but it was totally worth it.

It's a pretty place on a creek, complete with a petting zoo, honey from their hives and 80 some acres of Christmas trees.  Owner, James Horstkamp, certainly passed the fun test and he provided important guidance in the selection process.

The trees don't look as tall as they really are on the lot when you're standing there, and the one we picked turned out to be a little tall for the ten foot ceiling in my living room.  They trimmed down the trunk for us and shook out all of the dried needles, then it was into the car and back home.

It's now up and lit and decorated, and it's not the totally groomed and shaped like the ones on the lot.  It's sort of like me - wild with a few cow licks, and not overly tidy or perfect.  And for me, that is perfection!

Oh, and did I mention that the tree smells just heavenly?

If you've never done it, cutting down a fresh tree is something I'd recommend.  When you are looking for a tree lot in your area, here are some of the things to look for:

What kind of trees do they have?  Some have only one or two varieties.  I like Basford Creek because they offer a lot of choices.

What do they cost?  Basford Creek charges $45 for every tree no matter the size.  The one we chose would have been three times that at a commercial lot.

Will they help you cut and load?  There is no shame in letting them finish off the job with a chain saw!  And we could never have gotten the tree in the car by ourselves.

Basford Creek Tree Farm is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday until Christmas. Here's the map, and other contact information is the Basford Creek web site

I'll be back next year!

Hi Pat - I love your tree.  I used to swear by a fresh tree because they smell so wonderful.  My parents used to get a potted tree and then plant it outside after Christmas.  Some of their old Christmas trees are now at least 75 feet tall!

We have settled for a real looking (but not smelling) tree the last few years, and find it is easier since we always seem to be so busy at this time of year.  We have many pines on our property and can bring in some boughs to put on the mantel, etc and get the pine aroma from them.

Hi Pat, I always used to have live trees but they are just to hard to handle in the 12 foot variety. But I use fresh garland on the staircase to get the great smell.  I love live trees and you did yourself proud in both the both the selection and the decorating. This is a wonderful post and your guidelines are right on. Great job.

Pat, You picked a beautiful tree.  Like William I use to have a fresh tree that is until I got one that dropped its needles before Christmas.  I was picking needles out of the carpet until June.  I can see you have hardwood floors so that will not be a problem.  To be honest I now have hardwoods so the needles would not be a problem but I have got use to the artificial.  I do use Scentsy warmers to give me that pine smell.

Hi Pat... Any tree farm with it's own petting zoo is OK in my book!  Did you pet anyone?  What did Willie have to say about that?

Pat

The tree looks great and well worth the effort of picking it out and having it cut "to order". Thanks for sharing the tips on cutting your own tree.

Good luck and success.

How beautiful!  We haven't had a real tree in years, and every year I swear that next year we will. I miss the hunt, the cold hands and feet, the struggle to get it in the door without tearing anything up . . .  Next year, Zoe & I are going to find a live tree we can plant after Christmas -- now I've put it in writing, I'll have to keep my promise!

Lovely!  We've given up on the real tree.  My husband used to work nights and weekends, so the fun of picking out the tree as a family was compromised.  We also had a wood-burning stove that crisped it beyond belief.  One Christmas, the kids were boo-hooing about the ornaments dropping off and the droppy, no-longer-green branches.  We ended up getting another tree on Christmas Eve and starting over.  That rather did it for me, and artificial trees made it into our household  But I SO miss the wonderful smell.

Pat - what a beautiful Christmas tree; I haven't had one in years! The last time I had a tree my daughter had moved in with us and my son was visiting for the Holidays - that was 5 years ago.

Pat, Christmas in NC wouldn't be the same without a live Christmas Tree and a Christmas scented candle!  What a wonderful time of year.

Howdy and evening to you Patricia

Patricia,
y'all sure did pick out a mighty fine looking Christmas Tree. You sure are right about folks, sure can save money by going to a cut your own Christmas Tree Farm, plus they sure are a lot nicer. I sure like the way y'all fixed up your tree.

Have a good one

$45 is a great value. We just came back from a place that charges $70 for a five foot tree.  And the ones in your pictures look beautiful
