Holiday baking - Treats for Your Pet

Reblogger Debbie Walsh

This is a great recipe from Juli Vosmik for treating your pets to holiday (or everyday) baking.   Treats made with ingredients you probably already have in the kitchen.  After treating your own pets maybe drop some off at the local animal shelters for all the animals they have there waiting to be adopted.

Today, after a particularly stressful day, I thought it would be a great time to bake some treats for my furbabies and a few of my clients'.

I have lots of great cookie cutters - bones of all sizes, puppy paws, fire hydrants and kitties.

These are SO easy to make and all of my dog friends LOVE them.

My puppies sit in front of the countertop and oven for hours just waiting for them to cool off.

Doggy treats

2 cups whole wheat flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 cup unsalted natural peanut butter

1 cup skimmed milk

In a smaller bowl, whisk the flour and baking powder.  In a larger bowl, put in the peanut butter and milk.  Whisk until soupy with no lumps.  Add the flour mixture and mix until well blended - you'll probably need to use your hands for this step - the kids love to help here!!!

Knead for a minute or so, then roll out into about 1/4-1/2 inch thick.  Cut into desired shapes.  Place on ungreased cookie sheets.

Bake for 18-20 minutes at 375 degrees.  Let cool.

I have over 30 cookie cutters and make different shapes for different occasions.  When I'm making them for my boys, I speed up the whole process by just using a pizza cutter to make them into squares.  They don't care what they look like - they just LOVE 'em.

I think your furry friends, will too.

Oh, if you're looking for cookie cutters, Sur La Table has great ones and they go on sale right after Christmas for $.50 to $1.00.  A HUGE savings.  I also look for the peanut butter sales and coupons.  These typically cost me about $1.00 per batch - so much cheaper than store bought treats.

Debra, you'll have to stop by and let me know how yours turned out, although this is so fool proof.

Debra, you could always 1/2 the recipe, since your dog is so small.  1 1/2 teaspoon would be half of the baking powder.

So, how'd they turn out?  I'm just heading into the kitchen now to bake a batch for my boys - they've been really good this week.  LOL.

Juli-I haven't had time yet.  Plus I took a fall on the ice so I haven't done much.  Tomorrow is back to work too and I have a crazy week.  I hope to do it in the next month or so though.
