Have you Reached your Limit?

Definition: Limit - 1. Something that bounds, restrains, or confines  2. The utmost extent

A Question For Realtors: As a realtor - Have you done as much as you possibly could have? Have you maximized your business opportunities? Is there something you know you can improve upon but for one reason or another held back?

Our Limits and Challenges: As a child I remember being less confined in the imagination department in regards to what I thought was possible and what I thought wasn't. Almost every kid including myself had high hopes and dreams of becoming astronauts, policemen, and firemen. There was nothing we didn't think was possible for our future.

I have always wanted to break boundaries and to push myself forward so that I could achieve great things but there have been several challenges i've faced and still face today that keep me from reaching my limit.

My Personal Challenges: When I first became a realtor I was only fluent in Spanish and knew a very small amount of English. When I had the opportunity to represent a client that spoke English I took the easy way out and decided to hand them off to another trusted agent. It helped my relations with other agents but I knew that I was limiting myself. I was scared to speak the little English I knew and was reluctant to take the step to advance my knowledge of the language. Time went on and I found myself desperately searching for clients even though I had handed off many possible clients wanting to work with me. I was almost forced to overcome my fear so that I could get some business and when I finally did I wondered why I hadn't done it earlier. A huge weight was lifted off my chest. The hard work had paid off in both business and personal ways. I told myself that I would never let myself wait to be forced to overcome a problem that held me from achieving a goal.

The involvement of computers and the internet with real estate was just starting to grow about 5-10 years ago and I knew that it was something that should not be disregarded. I saw many agents experiencing the same thing that I was facing when I first started real estate and couldn't speak English, they just refused to change and to learn and improve their business and methods. I embraced the computer and learned as much as I could. I didn't see immediate progress in business but a ways down the line saw the internet being absolutely necessary in the way real estate is done today. Agents were forced into learning what they had always neglected while I was a step ahead

Active Rain: My Active Rain blog is something that I believe to be a part of 'not limiting myself'. Active Rain is a part of the progression of real estate on the internet. Whether Active Rain helps you get actual business is something that everybody will give you a different answer for but my thought is that it is something that a person can gain something from (business or non) so joining AR wouldn't hurt but could be a big help.

There is almost always something that you can improve upon. Push yourself and don't limit yourself to ANYTHING!

We can always improve ourselves and expand our knowledge base but there can be a limit to the amount of work we choose to do. One agent in my office has determined to do about 20 deals a year and no more. This provides him exactly what he needs to live on and spends the extra free time with his family. His choice fits his life. Not really a limit on learning but a limit on working. ;-)

Wow, Roy! You sure have come along way with your English! Look at you blogging in English like a Native speaker!!! That is not an easy task. I have been an ESL teacher for 20 years, and I so proud to see people thriving because they learned English. Congratulations for your accomplishments in Business and Real Estate. Keep pushing yourself!

To answer your question directly, "No, not even close."  It's true there are a finite number of hours in the day, but I personally don't believe that an agents limitations are based on what they can do a just one person.  There are entire industries out there, like home stagers, photographers, web designs, etc. that can help an agent leverage their time and money and in the end allow them to do much more than what they could alone.  2011 will definitely be a year of strengthening my strategic alliances as well as pushing myself and team to stay ahead of the curve.  Great post!

YES! I reached my limit 2 years ago. Enough was enough of being in a franchise and giving away lots of my money. Went back to school and got my broker's license. Now for 2 years I have had my own independent brokerage. The money has doubled and now tripled for my  income. Set your goals and go higher than just being a Realtor. Freedom is the WORD!

Hi Jorge -- I remember the first time I went sky diving, and when the plane door opened up, I realized that I didn't have a choice at that time to limit myself as the jump master didn't allow anyone to ride the plane back down for safety reasons. After that first dive, I realized I could do anything if I set my mind to it.

Hi Jorge, I enjoyed reading your post and no I have not reached my limits as a Realtor.

I can understand your earlier limitation of just speaking Spanish and not dealing with English speaking clients. In many places in the US - California, Florida, NYC or any place with a large concentration of immigrants is it easy to just speak ones native language and not learning English. I grew up bilingual English/Spanish and in San Jose, CA and now live in So. Florida, so I do see it. Congratulations on removing your language limitation.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Pushing the limits just expands the possibilities.  Based upon your post, it looks like you have definitely overcome any limitations resulting  from only speaking Spanish.  Now you have 2 languages and opportunities with even more clients than most agents.

Feliz Navidad!

I think it depends on the other person’s best interests. I know very little Spanish. Just enough to be dangerous. I don’t think I could adequately represent someone who spoke only Spanish. Even if the person knew some English (just enough to be dangerous), I think it would be in that person’s best interest if I referred him to someone who spoke Spanish fluently and simply took a referral fee.
