One of my Lexington, KY home inspection clients has reminded me of a problem with bathroom exhaust fans after his neighbors bathroom exhaust fan caught fire.. Thanks Chris, for bringing this to our attention.
It seems that several of these fans have caused fires in the last few years as shown by a quick Google Search
Fires Caused by Bathroom Exhaust Fans
If you don't want to see these guys visiting your house, you should take some precautions.
I suggest you remove the covers from your bathroom fans and examine them for signs of overheating which include:
- browned or burnt wires
- melted plastic
- scorch or burn marks on the case or cover
The covers come off in a variety of ways, screws, clips, etc. If you can't figure it out, look at the manual, find the manual online, or visit a local home improvement store and ask about removing the cover of your specific fan.
There's been several law suits over fires caused by Bathroom Exhaust Fans in the last few years as shown by this quick Google search.
Remember that bathroom fans need cleaning too!
Here's a guide from Home Improvements Depot on cleaning your bathroom exhaust fan which can be accomplished at the same time you're checking it for heat damage.
If you suspect that your bathroom fan is overheating, I suggest that you have it replaced.
