Does Your Obligation End at Closing?
"I don't have a dog in this fight any more." One of those phrases uttered by another agent that I will never forget. It brings to light the question, does your obligation end at the closing table?
I would argue no, but then, I was on the receiving end of that comment. In this particular case, the seller had occupancy for 30 days after closing and had agreed to pay rent. He didn't, and moved off without a forwarding address to the buyer. The seller's agent, who had already gotten a paycheck, informed me that he "no longer had a dog in this fight".
I tend to keep in contact with my clients for a life time, so the notion of "no longer having a dog in the fight" is foreign to me. I did manage to at least get some forwarding info at last, and the buyers did recoup the rent. I can't help but wonder what kind of long term career prospect you can have if you have such a short term outlook. When it comes to my clients, I'll always have a "dog in the fight."
