Take My Advice I'm Not Using It - Part Four

I've been writing a little lately about my professional advice vs personal preferences when it comes to owning an average house in an average price point. Even though I know what the majority of potential home buyers are looking for or expecting but I just can't help but wonder why. For example, Granite or marble counter tops.

They are so veryexpensive, beautiful yes, but expensive.  What concerns me further is that everyone I speak to who has owned granite or marble counter tops talk about how difficult they are to keep. I don't know personally because I've never owned a home with them but come on, it's a counter top! I'm like everyone else with a busy life, kids, work.  Who has the time or inclination for maintenance of a counter top?

Also, what happens when the style or color trend changes? I see some counters where the natural design is sometimes "busy" and I can predict a design change will require replacement in just a few years.  That's just not a chance I'm willing to take given the expense.

Again, check out your local supplier for the latest in laminate counter tops.  I just replaced my counter top a month ago and at first glance you can't tell that it's not granite. The finish on it is new is much better quality than previously found on the market.  And here's another confession, I don't fear cutting a sandwich on my counter and when the design trend changes so will my counter top, very easily and without the high expense.

Laminate rocks! I love it. You can detonate a grenade on it and not leave a mark.

I use it everywhere I can! I stopped recommending Granite two years ago.

Like I always say...When everyone has it, nobody wants it.

I'm recommending the quartz countertops these days  to those homes that require it strictly due to the competition...and the lady at Home Depot says NO ONE orders them but me. She thinks I am insane because I swiftly dismiss any of her granite suggestions. Been there, done that, a lot!

However,I am renovating my "forever" house right now, and I always envisioned a kitchen kinda like an old soda fountain shop, so it's genuine Italian white marble with gray veins for me (Carrera Blanco) in my kitchen and a lovely reed-look laminate in my laundry room. I couldn't decide on the bathrooms, so it's Pedestal sinks for all!

Hi Tina,

Hear, hear! I'm so glad you said this out loud.

I for one have moved on from the granite benchtop thing. They aren't as user friendly as many home owners seem to think. And as you rightly point out, they cost a fortune. And yes, the color can go out of style that would require another expensive update.

We're finding that almost every home has a granite benchtop of some kind. They are everywhere, even in the more modestly priced homes. The granite benchtop has now become very unique in a conforming kind of way.

We installed a brand new kitchen just before Christmas 2010 after buying a house where the old kitchen was in a bad location and was functionally obsolete. I insisted on NOT HAVING GRANITE benchtops for all the reasons here. I made a deliberate decision to buck the current trend and go with laminate and do something slightly different with this terrific eco friendly material. It looks good, wears well, is easy to maintain and is less expensive to install, so won't cost me a bomb to udpate when it needs it in several years time.

I say; give laminate another go!

Just wanted to add that I 100% agree with Michelle. For those homes who need a finish that is more upmarket, I recommend quartz - not granite.

I too like the quartz counters as a great alternative to granite.  I'm still a personal fan of granite and marble and some are better than others to "keep clean"!

Patricia, thanks for commenting.

Michelle, I quite agree with you, higher caliber homes require higher quality products but it really isn't needed for the average family home.

Thanks Donna and I'm quite impressed you would buck "the system".  Good for you!!

Kathy, thanks for commenting; there are some pretty nice granite and marble I don't argue that at all. I would just like to see average homes be more affordable and for luxury products remain with luxury homes.  I take issue with higher expectations of potential home buyers disappointed that the "average" home has laminate counter tops.

I love granite BUT I'm very frustrated with the upkeep of it in my current home.  Somehow I don't think that it was properly buffed by the installer and now it's a giant hassle to keep it looking good.  In Hawaii the granite is easy, just seal it every six months and it looks great, but not at this home.  Anybody have a solution...suggestion?

I agree that today's laminate, and the huge selection available, can be a very budget-friendly choice!
