I'm not trying to get anyone to break of their addiction or tell them to stay away from the greatest site out there.  Iinternet know I need a 12 step program to help me here.  But I found a cool article today on how a surfing the web has become an obsession for a majority of American adults.  That many adults have given up on friends, and even "adult" activities to surf the web.

Turns out that out of the 1011 adults surveyed, just 15% would feel okay giving up the internet for a day or less, and a ful 80% said they could not go a week without the internet!  I know I'm firmly in the 15% that can't go a day, heck I just went to go get a coffee and left my phone and felt almost alone, and unconnected.

I have given up the internet for days at a time. Anything in excess is bad.....thats sad to me. People can strike a balance in life and should. Nothing wrong with the internet as long as they are getting outside and doing other things. Maybe they have made the internet more important than it should be. We are not menat to stay indoors all day. :)

Jon - I tried this.  Took a vacation (expenses were paid for me), I decided it would be a working vacation.  Go figure.  And believe me I worked -- especially on AR.  I look at AR as work and fun.  I love the informational angle and I appreciate the advice of the experts, AR is the best place to get all this information for free! I love free by the way.... so to answer your question. N O P E, not interested. smile

Yeah, I saw that article too. My first question about it was whether they included people whose career required them to be online every day and how many were online for personal reasons. I have to be online when I am at work and I usually check in a few times when I am off. My job in online marketing requires it. It seems that the article tried to slant it so it appeared to be a bad thing and in many cases I can see that side. On the other hand many people use the Internet for all of their news, communication, etc which IMO is no different than reading a newspaper, watching TV, phone calls, etc. IMO the Internet is becoming the preferred telecommunication/news resource for many people so they rely on it for other things than just surfing the net and looking at porn, which IMO is what the article implies most people are doing.

I do occasionally remove myself from Internet accessibility....but it is a challenge. Fortunately my business partner is available when I am not. I guess it is just part of the real estate lifestyle!

I would love to live my life without the internet.  It's become a valuable tool but I do go days at a time without using it.

I could go about 4 days- that is it.  I am too much a control freak and need to know what is going on- it is hard to remember before the internet

I love it when it is around, but could said away on a cruise and never think about it.

Better question: could you live a week without watching sports on TV? I ask my husband this whenever he questions my blogging.

My name is Naoma and I am an internet addict... it is the first thing I do in the mornings is check my emails, account info, and weather.  And throughout the day, my laptop/internet is always on!

I cannot go more than a few hours...even if its to check my emails for a couple of minutes.

Janet - I like your question.  In my house beleive it or not, my wife is the bigger sports nut, she watches the Sox every night.

Interesting comment by many, that the survey didn't take in to account the possibility of those who use the internet for work.

Mark - I agree with you that the article did seem to have a slant that using the internet is a bad thing.  Surely if you neglect things like work, bathing, eating, etc. it might be a bad thing, but that's a whole different thing and not what the article is about.

Keep surfing everyone, and see you on ActiveRain.  I'll see you tomorrow, since I can't go a whole day.

Oh, the horror! What a cruel questions to ask, John! You ought to be ashamed of yourself. LOL But to actually answer your question: before AR I could go maybe 2 days. After AR, it's a big, fat 0 (unless I am physically unable to get online).

Not willingly, that's for sure :) But I'm so busy right now I struggle to find time to check in as often as I'd like. And my blog is a week behind :(

If I have just 2 minutes to get online, I spend it all on AR!!
