Attitudes Shape Outlooks

By

Last night I got to attend the Merle Haggard/Kris Kristofferson concert that was held at the Buell Theatre in in Denver, CO.  It was a great show.     I wasn't sure what to expect since they both are kind of elderly now.

The last time I went to a concert of a "former" great, I left very disappointed.   There is nothing "former" about these two.  They put on a great show.  When I was leaving, all I heard was positive comments and people wondering how old concert in Denver Merle and Kris are now.   (According to this morning's Google research, they are 73 and 74 respectively.)

The amazing thing about this experience was that theoretically it could have been defined as a disappointment.  Yet, Merle and Kris, took an unexpected negative, acknowledged it, put a humorous spin on it...and the audience left feeling anything but disappointed.

What happened?  Something happened to Kris's voice.  He had a difficult time singing for any length of time.   The plan had been for Merle to sing three songs, and then Kris would sing three, then Merle and so on.   Kris did try to sign....just enough.  It was clearly not a good night for Kris to be singing.  Every once in a while, his "true voice" would come through it sounded great.  His attempts endeared him to the audience.   Everyone gave him credit for trying.   It just made him all the more likeable.   It certainly didn't hurt anything that he looked great from my vantage point.  Grey hair was very becoming on him.

And then Merle - Merle carried the show.  There is a reason that Merle Haggard is frequently called a legend.   Last night, Merle demonstrated that he's still got "it."  His music was great!  Merle is sounds the same live as he does recorded.  Merle is a fabulous entertainer, a good story teller and he left us laughing on a number of occasions.  His performance reminded me that fancy lighting, smoke and fireworks are not necessary for a captivating performance when you have talent.

The Buell Theater was packed.  Everyone really seemed to especially enjoy "The Fightin Side of Me."  Merle got the crowd singing "Okie from Muskogee" with him.   He also got us thinking about how his songs no longer apply to just one particular war.  They apply to our service members in a number of wars.

Now, Merle did harass Kris for not pulling his part.  He joked about their rehearsal having been a waste of time.  At the end of the show, Merle concluded by remarking that someone that can write songs as good as Kris can shouldn't have to sing them.

The concert could have been disappointing since we didn't get to hear Kris sing much.  Yet, because they both had a positive attitude, we, the audience had a great time.  We were sad that the concert came to an end.  We were wowed by Merle's performance.  We were really glad that we went.

In conclusion:

1) If you like country music and get the opportunity - go see Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson in concert.  You won't regret it.

2) If you feel like you are aging, go see Merle and Kris.  Kris makes grey hair look great!!! Merle's energy is inspiring.  They both demonstrated that you can still have a lot of fun in your 70's doing what you love.

3)  If things aren't turning out how you expected, choose to take a positive attitude and "direct your destiny." (I saw this general idea on someone else's blog earlier this week - but haven't been able to relocate it yet.)

What a wonderful post!  I am so glad that you were able to enjoy Kris and Merle!  I have always loved their work and I am saddened that Kris is struggling with his voice,  but...it is great that he is still trying and with a fabulous sense of humor.  Aptly put: Attitude is Everything!

I saw Merle in concert back in the 80's, but never Kris.  Didn't realize they were still performing these days.  Hope it's for the love of the music and not the need for money.

Kris' music has soothed my soul since the early 70's - great to hear he's on tour.  I still consider his version of Me n Bobbie McGee the authentic one...

Darn - times like this are when I do wish I lived a bit closer to a city. Glad you got to hear the legends, even if I am just a little bit jealous. And, when all is said and done, I'm still glad I live in the woods.

To each of you, thank you very much for taking time to comment on a post that really meant something to me.  Merle and Kris and their ability to overcome a less than desirable situation really impressed me.

Jeff, thanks.... I read that Merle had to have part of his lung removed several years ago because of cancer.  He's the one that I would have expected to have been struggling.

Simon, I'm under the impression that they are doing it just because they enjoy it.  Again, that is based largely on my Google research.  They seemed to be having fun.

Brad, I can only hope that I'll be like them when I"m in my 70's.

Sylvie, me too.

Paddy, the venue was great.  I'm looking forward to discovering the other great Colorado venues that you mentioned.  I'll have to put your suggestions on my "to do/see list."

Marte, I'm fortunate that Denver is just an hour away.  There is no place like a nice quiet place in the country.

Lynn, thank you.  I actually thought about using the lemonade phrase when I was writing this.  Very applicable.

Jeanne, Kris certainly had a number of women yelling "I love you Kris." Even at 74.  So there must be a number of women that agree with you.   (Fortunately, there wasn't so many women yelling that it became a nuisance. Just enough to make the event even more memorable.)

Steven, they seemed to be truly enjoying themselves.  If I understood Merle correctly, Kris was even doing some parts in some movies right now.  Guys like this would probably be miserable if not regularly in lime light.

Mark, yes.  Nuture an attitude of gratitude.

Gary, their music certainly made me miss the days when I used dance to their music.  I've GOT to make time to see Willie now.

Dawn, thank you. They didn't act like it was an ongoing issue so I'm hoping that Kris was just a little sick that night.

Robbie, you are welcome.

Annie, I can't believe I didn't think about the benefits of having the partner when I was writing this.  EXCELLENT point.

Charita, their show makes me want to see some more of the legends.  Thanks for the comment.

I am so glad we still have these 2 with us so that the younger generations can appreciate them too.  We still have Willie and George Jones too, but most of the icons of this era have left us.  Waylon and Johnny and Marty, all gone.

Thanks for a great post

Sondra, I was in broadcasting for over a decade.  One of the many formats I sold, included Country Music.  I have sat back stage, and on stage with many legends.  You learn alot about egos, etiquette, and true talent in that business.

I remember Billy Cyrus at one huge event, where he was the final act!  God was he an ass.  He didn't realize it, but his antics, caused the first couple rows of  fans at this outdoor event, to actually turn their chairs/backs on him.  It was even on CMT!   He really thought he was going to thrill the audience with his "achy-breaky heart".

I've seen Lori Morgan, who wouldn't even let her feet touch the ground, because it might dirty her shoes.  (Like her audience hasn't seen a bit of dirt before).  I have seen Joe Diffie walk off the stage because he got so drunk the night before he couldn't perform.

What was interesting is to see guys like Vince Gill, Marty Stewart, and Kathy Mathea back stage and on.  Now these folks were incredible.  I've seen Vince Gill 3 times, and never has this guy ever disappointed.  He too was the final performing act  at this same outdoor event (different year)  It was so cold and rainy out that day, but he finally got on stage ( you could see his breath on stage) and he told the audience  he was going to play his a--- off and HE DID!!

I have learned one thing over the years.  True talent is like a fine wine,..it gets better with age.  It mellows and reflects a by-gone flavor that can't be duplicated!
