Snow Removal Scams Plague The Elderly

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with IDTheftSecurity.com Inc

The lowest of low life scammers generally prey upon the weaker and often the frail. And all too often that is children or elderly. In this case, snow removal scams happen when we have winters like this one where snow is piling up 6-10 feet over the course of the season.

Daily television news reports highlight roofs collapsing as a result of the heavy snow piling up and people go into panic mode and shovel off their roofs. None of this ever may sense to me especially due to the fact you are more likely to fall of the roof and break a bone than your roof being in danger of collapsing.

NECN reports “an 86-year old man who lives in Amesbury, Massachusetts was embarrassed and nervous after police say he paid an area contractor 48 hundred dollars to clear snow from his roof.”

Strangely the contractors’ last name that did the dirty deed was named “Snow”. Title should read “Scammer Snow snows senior with snow swindle” I should be a writer.

“The Snows are known to authorities throughout the area– in fact — across the country for allegedly preying on elderly people, charging them exorbitant prices for snow removal, paving and construction jobs.”

This kind of scam happens much more frequently than one would think. Before you or anyone you are a caretaker for goes and spends any money on snow removal from a roof, contact your local building department to get an idea if your property is at risk.

Otherwise when making any kind of investment in snow removal expect to pay less than $50.00 per man, per hour plus any heavy equipment charges and get an estimate of how long the project will take. Further, demand the contractor provide a certificate of insurance should something go wrong.

That is awful! Plus another good tip is NEVER EVER EVER give money up front.. If they want to get paid they do the job first and then you pay them! In real estate our commissions don't come first our commissions come once we get the job done!

Goodness, that chaps my butt; preying on the defensless, innocent, trusting elders pees me off.

Mind my language, but that is a disgrace, they need to be ashamed of themselves.

Robert,

This is where neighbors should be looking out for the elderly when this type of snow hits. Unconscionable.

I had to resort to snow removal several times this winter - it cost a fortune. But my driveway is gravel on a hill and 200 feet long - up to about 6 inches I can handle it  though its a LOT of work  for a 40 something woman...But this time there was no alternative but to have multiple plowings.  I was wondering what the elderly do because even doing all the walkways was rough.   My back and shoulders really felt it. And  no I don't live on estate - I live in a small gatehouse on a large piece of land.

Sorry hit that send button to quick - What I meant to say was that of course with the sheer volume - older people were at risk for being literally sealed  up in their homes - not to mention the roof situation - though we didn't have that in my area.  They weresitting ducks for scammers.

Wow, some people are unbelievable. What sort of a person can take advantage of the elderly and still live with himself? I agree that neighbors and family need to watch out for the elderly and help with the snow.

Hi Robert ~ I was surprised by those reports - surprised because I know of several triple decker condo buildings that paid more than $2000 to have the roof shoveled during this crazy winter. So the figures quoted didn't seem that crazy to me. And I don't thnk you can pay the same rates for shoveling three stories up that you pay for shoveling your driveway.

Robert it saddens me to see the elderly falling for such scams.  These heartless scammers prey on the most vulnerable.

That is terrible!  I hate to hear of stories where anyone is taken advantage especially the elderly.    I think there is nothing lower than someone taking advantage of a person that is in need.  Charge a fair price for the work needed to be completed.   Is that really so difficult.   No one said do it for free or give a discount but fair pay for a job done.

Snow removal this year was a nightmare.  I had quotes of $1,100 for a single cleaning of a small cape's roof.   I was like your joking right ?   I ended up calling around and purchasing my own roof rake to do the job.   After I was done I gave it to my father in law and he has passed it along for others to use.

It is truly not that difficult to be a good person.    Just treat people like you wish to be treated.   Seems this is a dying fad as there is a growing population of people who put themselves first all the time everytime.

The thing with seniors is; they came from an era where your word, or a handshake, was your bond. Most people now don't even know what that means... Here, this winter, there have been reports from the police of men posing as snow removal people going door to door and if someone doesn't answer their knock, they walk around back and break in...

This is a great post. I live in Arizona, it gives me a totally different view of problems that we never see, after a hail storm everyone was getting quotes for roof damage and I heard on for a hail damaged A/C unit,
