Children from the suburbs usually don’t walk as much. Our mantra was “we can’t park any closer than our garage”. Often children that come in to the city to visit need to rest every couple of blocks or so. Other parents in the city have remarked on it in their experience also.
When we go out to eat we walk, when we go to the movies we walk, when they go to after school activities we walk, when they go to school we walk, when they go to friends houses, we walk. That’s a lot of exercise!
We particularly enjoyed Hill House. It is an organization that brings younger children from primarily Back Bay, Beacon Hill, Bay Village and South End for sports, and a host of classes such as Weird Science and wood working. We spent many Saturday mornings on the Esplanade watching soccer matches in the fall and softball games on The Common in the evening in the spring with other parents.
We also took advantage of the Boston Ballet and for over a dozen years the Boston Children’s Theatre.
Many of the things above give the parents a chance to make friends, too.
My oldest daughter took our dog to the Hale House (an assisted living residence) every week for five years. She had her first two jobs on Newbury Street in the summer. My younger daughter’s first job was an intern with the Attorney General through her school (Boston Latin School). And both girls have plenty babysitting and pet sitting between them. All in all, we have fond memories of our condo in Back Bay and hope that another new family can enjoy this parlor level home as we have as we now downsize and move on to the next stage in our lives.
