How Can I Help?

        ???????? Mary Yonkers

Are there days when even standing on your head isn't enough to satisfy some customers/clients?  Then your child or spouse ask you ONE more question?

Did you get up early so you could try to fit everything in and you still had a long 'To do' list when you collapsed into bed with your clothes on?

Did you have dinner last night?  Yes, if you count the stale chips & half a candy bar dinner found in the car.

phoneJust as you are falling asleep the phone rings.  It's a co-broke agent telling they locked the key inside your new listing.  Oh yes, they forgot to turn off the lights.

phoneAs the phone rings again you wonder, 'How could morning come so early?'  It's the client you spent all day with yesterday saying they changed their minds about the 'Dream House' and want to back out of the contract.

If you haven't experienced any of the above then you probably haven't been in real estate long enough.  The above picture was taken during recent class I taught.  I had just heard every excuse in the book why they didn't have an assignment done.

Next class I rotated the photo to illustrate the point  . . .

Mary Yonkers

Somedays are just like that in real estate.  Yes, I can help, but I am not a miracle worker.

A few things help me and most important is setting priorities.  First things first and sometimes that means having a real dinner so I have the strength and brain power to deal with all the little and BIG issues that each day presents.

phoneDo you ever ignore calls during dinner?  Maybe your family would enjoy talking to you, too.

Other days I need to delegate or just ask for help.  It's amazing what kids (or spouse) will do when asked.

Not often, but there are times when I need to back off and let the chips fall allow the buyers back out.  Amazingly they usually buy another property from me later AND refer their friends and family to me.

Sorry about the 'Tease' post.  Guess it was the d . . . made me write that one this morning.  Somedays we just have to have FUN IN THE RAIN.

Toni--thanks for the positive spin.  Yes, sometimes the buyers just need to vent and then they come back to the table.  Part of our job is hand-holding.  We just have to keep our cool and help them through the process.  We are the professionals.

Mary, I think I just had one of those days... I didn't even notice I didn't eat for lunch until I heard some grumblings coming from my stomach while talking to a customer and then later during dinner... of course!... the phone rang!

Mary - OY VEY!!! Can we talk?  Seems like I have days like that every week.  Some days, it's as if I'm saying, "Hi I'm your friendly, hard-working MLO, how crazy should I let you drive me today?"  LOL

Mary, don't I know it.  What a wonderful way to express an upside down day.  Only you, Mary, only you could do such a great job on it.  I am so glad to see that others have the same kind of days with the same kind of problems and frustrations.  It's so great to have people here that can all relate.

Funny post Mary! I liked the part when you said "Maybe your family would enjoy talking to you, too.". How often do we forget our families. Thanks for the reminders.

Mary, Although I haven't been in the business a long time, I can relate. Prioritization, focusing on the moment and doing it right the first time are all key to being able to sleep well at night. Great post and very timely.

Once again good advice from the teacher Mary! A good dinner with family with a few laughs puts a whole new perspective on things and helps brain storming the issues too!

Silvia--I hope you have a better day on Wednesday.  Try to eat meals.  That will give you more energy to face the challenges of the day.

Donne--Yes, let's talk.  I think we relate to each other well.  'Don't drive me crazy,' might be title of post to come.  Love your weekly posts featuring your favorite AR members.

Karen--Having people who relate to what we deal with each and every day w/o feeling the competition of our own market that is the beauty of ActiveRain.  Keep coming back.  I am glad that you are here.

Tammy--Seven (7) Mondays--that should be title of your next post.  You tell it like it is in the trenches day in and day out.  I love your style of writing.

Tom--Thanks for seeing the humor in my post.  Yes, our families need to be a top priority, but too often we put others there.  We all need to be reminded occasionally.

Steve--Yes, I agree with your comment about doing it right the first time.  That allows us to sleep better at night.  Thanks for stopping here and commenting.

Al & Peggy--Your comment put a smile on my face this morning.  Dave & I just did a bit of brainstorming with his son, Pete, during a visit with his family in Cleveland.

Michael--Yes, let it ring (the phone).  If it's important they will leave a message, right?

Thanks everyone.  I appreciate your comments.

Mary,

What a great post!! Many of us feel just the same way daily.  I have gotten to the point where the phone is muted during the dinner hour and generally I don't feel the need to answer the few calls I may get during that time.  We all need to take more time for ourselves.  If we are constantly frazzled we will be of no help to others.

Hi Mary -- Some wise and sage advice in there. I never let my meals be interrupted, never.  Same with family time.  While I bend over backwards for clients, I draw a line.

There's an old saying: A lack of planning on your part does not constitute a crisis on mine!

Mary - thankfully there are 2 of us so when one is too busy hopefully the other can... that's just our own way but hey it works.... But we surely all have had one of those days when we get those wonderfully annoying calls just when we were settling down for the evening.... Great post Mary Congrats on the feature.... Your posts get better everyday!

Lisa & Bob,  Thanks so much for the compliment.  I was excited about the feature, but even better is networking with my friends from ActiveRain.

Mary, it's terrific to not only see you having fun in the rain, but also to invite everyone else to the fun by writing this blog post! Setting priorities was one of the best things I did after a couple of years doing real estate...and I think it's the reason I'm still in the business today. :)
