Earth Hour in Toronto was a Bust

Ontario Real Estate Source

By Brian Madigan LL.B.

You would think that with all the energy conservation talk these days, that something like Earth Hour would be a remarkable success.

Well, not in Toronto.

It started two years ago, an realized savings of 15% in 2009, that dropped last year to 10%, and it dropped in half this year to 5% savings.

Some Toronto homes were photographed during Earth Hour, and they appeared to be quite illuminated. They included the house of the former Mayor, the present Provincial Energy Minister, and (this is very, very difficult to believe) the President of Earth Day Canada.

So, this now looks like a complete failure. No one cares! The politicians and the political lobbyists don't even bother with appearances.

Hi Brian - I found the part about the president of Earth Day Canada to be most interesting.

100% representation means NEVER DUAL AGENCY !

Brian - better to leave the lighting on so the inhabitant(s) may spend the "Earth" hour insulating and draft sealing the dwelling unit - (the "cave" as it were). After all, we live in Canada, eh?

What a shame that the president of Earth Day Canada doesn't appear to get behind his own movement. He's got some 'splaining to do.

Brian, I believe in the power of one.  and if we raise awareness, and make small changes, collectively, we really can make a difference.

I have to admit that I got busy and simply forgot this year. It's a great symbolic gesture but as Larry points out we should all be busy make our lives/homes more energy efficient.
