Matthew 11:25-12:21

Jesus Praises the Father and Invites Disciples to Come to Him

25At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for hiding these things from wise and intelligent people and revealing them to little children. 26Yes, Father, this is what pleased you.

27“My Father has turned everything over to me. Only the Father knows the Son. And no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son is willing to reveal him.

28“Come to me, all who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. 29Place my yoke

over your shoulders, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble. Then you will find rest for yourselves 30because my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 12

Jesus Has Authority Over the Day of Worship—Mark 2:23–28; Luke 6:1–5

1Then on a day of worship Jesus walked through the grainfields. His disciples were hungry and began to pick the heads of grain to eat.

2When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing something that is not right to do on the day of worship.”

3Jesus asked them, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his men were hungry? 4Haven’t you read how he went into the house of God and ate[b] the bread of the presence? He and his men had no right to eat those loaves. Only the priests have that right. 5Or haven’t you read in Moses’ Teachings that on the day of worship the priests in the temple do things they shouldn’t on the day of worship yet remain innocent? 6I can guarantee that something[c] greater than the temple is here. 7If you had known what ‘I want mercy, not sacrifices’ means, you would not have condemned innocent people.

8“The Son of Man has authority over the day of worship.”

Jesus Heals on the Day of Worship—Mark 3:1–6; Luke 6:6–11

9Jesus moved on from there and went into a synagogue. 10A man with a paralyzed hand was there. The people asked Jesus whether it was right to heal on a day of worship so that they could accuse him of doing something wrong.

11Jesus said to them, “Suppose one of you has a sheep. If it falls into a pit on a day of worship, wouldn’t you take hold of it and lift it out? 12Certainly, a human is more valuable than a sheep! So it is right to do good on the day of worship.”

13Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” The man held it out, and it became normal again, as healthy as the other.

14The Pharisees left and plotted to kill Jesus. 15He knew about this, so he left that place.

Jesus Is God’s Servant

Many people followed him, and he cured all of them. 16He also ordered them not to tell people who he was. 17So what the prophet Isaiah had said came true:

 18“Here is my servant
      whom I have chosen,
         whom I love,
            and in whom I delight.
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will announce justice to the nations.
19He will not quarrel or shout,
and no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20He will not break off a damaged cattail.
He will not even put out a smoking wick
until he has made justice victorious.
21The nations will have hope because of him.”

Psalm 51:17

17The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit.
O God, you do not despise a broken and sorrowful heart.

Micah 6:6-8

6What should I bring when I come into the Lord’s presence,
when I bow in front of the God of heaven?
Should I bring him year-old calves as burnt offerings?
7Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams
or with endless streams of olive oil?
Should I give him my firstborn child because of my rebellious acts?
Should I give him my young child for my sin?
8You mortals, the Lord has told you what is good.
This is what the Lord requires from you:
         to do what is right,
            to love mercy,
and to live humbly with your God.

Lord, I said, "I want to be your man, not my own.

So to you I give my money, my car - even my home."

Then, smug and content, I relaxed with a smile

and whispered to God, "I bet it's been a while, Since anyone has given so much - so freely?"

His answer surprised me. "He replied, Not really."

"Not a day has gone by since the beginning of time,

That someone hasn't offered meager nickels and dimes,

Golden altars, and crosses, contributions and penance,

Stone monuments and steeples; but why not repentance?"

"The money, the statues, the cathedrals you've built,

Do you really think I need your offerings of guilt?

What good is money that's meant only to salve

The hurting conscience that so many of you have?"

"Your lips know no prayers. Your eyes, no compassion.
But you will go to church (when church-going's in fashion).

"Just give me a tear- a heart ready to mold.
And I'll give you a mission, a message so bold-

That a fire will be stirred where there was only death,
And you heart will be flamed by my life and my breath."

I stuck my hands in my pockets and kicked at the dirt.
It's tough to be corrected (I guess my feelings were hurt).

But it was worth the struggle to realize the thought.
That the cross isn't for sale and Christ's blood can't be bought.

Paul...thanks for the gentle jolt [or stark smack against the head] ; how often one can work at odds with the Lord while believing all is done in His Name.  Who is Max Lucado to whom you 'point' at the end of the conversation with the Lord?  have a great rest of the week.

Thanks Barb,

Max Lucado is a long time Christian Author and has written some of the best books that I've ever read.

Here is his website:

http://www.maxlucado.com/

When I used to be in the Christian Bookstore business as an owner in my former life (pre-real estate) his books was always top sellers for us.

Some times top selling authors don't always mean they are the best (in my opinion anyway), but Max Lucado is extremely sound doctrinally, and very thought provoking, yet very easy to read and understand too!

He can make you laugh and cry at the same time!
