Moderate Sleep and Less Stress May Help with Weight Loss

Image: Danilo Rizzuti / FreeDigitalPhotos.net If you want to increase your chances of losing weight, reduce your stress level and get adequate sleep. A new Kaiser Permanente study found that people trying to lose at least 10 pounds were more likely to reach that goal if they had lower stress levels and slept more than six hours—but not more than eight hours—a night.

The paper, published recently in the International Journal of Obesity, was the result of a study funded by the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Nearly 500 participants from Kaiser Permanente in Oregon and Washington took part in the study, which measured whether sleep, stress, depression, television viewing and computer screen time were correlated with weight loss. Several previous studies have found an association between these factors and obesity, but few have looked at whether these factors predict weight loss.

“This study suggests that when people are...[read more...]

This is so true! You have to find a balance to moderate your stress level, wore ever is working for your body (sleep, extra size, diet etc.) But when is coming with depression...etc. you have to find and fix the problem to reduce your stress level.  When you have both (stress and "depression") I don't think you have extra body weigh, you full with energies! :)

Hi Luv,  Hope all is well.  My 2 cents is that I’ve been thin my entire life. Both my brother and mom struggle with being overweight and they do not sleep much at all.   I sleep A LOT – on average 8/9 hours a night.  Growing up I would sleep 12 hours no problem.  It’s simple. The more we sleep, the less we eat, the less time we have to be stressed and the majority of us have   “sweet dreams” when we do sleep, thus allowing our mind, body and soul to be happy.  Read “Fit For Life” by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond.  This book changed the way I perceive food and I have forever changed my eating habits.

Hope all is beautiful in your world!

I am hearing this more and more. Cortisol,a stress hormone increases with stress and lack of sleep and causes an increase in weight gain. Let's go back to bed!

Thank You and Have a Great Day, Kathleen

Thank you for the information! I have been feeling a lot better these past few nights getting 8 hours sleep. And now I know that it can improve weight loss! Whoo hoo!

This makes good sense to me, and have read many studies that confirmed sleeping too little and worrying too much makes you gain weight. For me I have finally lost weight (11 pounds and still losing) on Weight watchers, and I love their new program! I want to combine it with more exercise, plenty of sleep and hopefully less stress which is the toughest for me, and the most likely to steal my sleep!
