Where Am I?

By
Home Inspector with JRV Home Inspection Services, LLC HOI 394

In our travels we happen upon unique stuff. The trick is to recognize it when it's in front of us. There can be something intriguing in what at first glance appears mundane. Or that could just be my warped sense of what I find interesting.

Here is something I found fascinating, can you guess what it might be?

You didn't think the answer was here, did you?

Funny - if it was from neglect, we'd most probably tsk-tsk.  But if it's expensive Ralph Lauren crackle paint we think it's stylish!

I suspect that it may be old resilient floor covering, probably asphalt based linoleum. It's always hard to tell from a single photo, The regularity and closeness of the cracks suggest that is is near (or over) a heat source but age alone will do it too.

Jim,

Tough from the pic but I have seen this same cracking on the use of some patching compound then painted.

I've seen this personally, after trying to fill too large of a gap with drywall mud! Or before I 'belt sand' my heels... :) Hopefully you'll tell us!

Cindy, Not going there :)

Lyn, Close.

Larry, Not quite.

Ann, Answer coming up.

Richard, Funny and true!

Robert, Nope.

Dawn, Not even close.

Carol, Yep.

Don, Not this time.

Peg, Sanding your heels? Ouch!

Charlie, Nope.

Nutsy, Have you been drinking again.

Cracked paintSome of you were real close. Here is the answer. It's cracked wall paint. The house was not winterized and all the paint cracked. A lot of it fell off the walls in large sheets, but in this one room it to me looked like a dry river bed. That's why I titled the blog Where Am I, instead of what am I.

My college bio prof said that we can look real closely at the prettiest-girl-in-the-school's nose and be totally turned off by what we see!  His advice:  don't look too closely at anything!

And I would have guessed paint.

Hi Jim, sorry I did not get in on the guessing soon enough.  I was going with the crackle type paint you see on the shabby chic furniture.  But then I could not resist reading the answers once i had paged down to your replies.
