This weekend was a beautiful 65° in central New Hampshire. It was the 1st entire weekend that has really felt like Spring has finally sprung in the Squam Lakes Region. We were able to take my patio furniture out of the shed and put everything back up onto my deck, where we enjoyed a traditional New England summer meal consisting of 1” thick burgers cooked on the grill and macaroni salad.
I also had an opportunity to go for a walk on both Saturday and Sunday. While I was out walking in my neighborhood on Saturday I noticed some trash along the side of the roads. 98% of our snow melted from the warm weather last week, leaving trash now visible. When I got back to my house it made me take a closer look around my own property and I was thankful that I only had a couple pieces of debris that had blown into my yard during our very windy winter. After picking things up, I started thinking more about my walk and about how my neighborhood or ‘my sandbox’ if you will, looked and it really bothered me. I’m sure some people might think they're doing their part just by recycling, I too may have thought the same thing - prior to my walk. However, now I felt like there was more we ‘as a community’ could all do to take care of this problem in our area.
The next day when I went for my walk, I went with a pair of gloves and a plastic bag in hand and with every piece of debris that I picked up I felt good, I felt like I was making a difference. I waved to all my neighbors who were out doing yard work and if anything, at the least, I’m hoping I made a good impression on them to be more aware of their surroundings and perhaps be more willing to reach out beyond their property line to do more to keep our neighborhood looking its best!
No, of course it’s not ‘my job’ to pick up other people’s trash, however, I feel that I can’t expect other people to respect ‘my town’ if I don't respect if enough to pitch in... So I pitched in.
