Ashley Oakland Investigation

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with Howard Hanna Rand Realty License # 49FA1074963

Like many associations across the country, our own MLS had a moment of silence at our monthly meeting yesterday in memory of fallen Realtor colleague Ashley Oakland. The news has been a bitter pill to swallow for agents all over the USA, and I can't fathom her loved ones' grief and suffering.

Today's news informed us that a search warrant has been issued in the investigation, which remains ongoing, with no arrests at this point. The details are sealed, which is just as well. I don't care about the details as much as I want to see justice served.

Ashley was buried this past Thursday April 14, and according the the news more than 1600 people attended the services. She was eulogized by her sister Brittany. I eulogized my late brother, and I know firsthand that it must have been extremely difficult for Brittany.

Folks, if you don't have a safety and security policy in your office, get one. If you have one, review it with your team. We cannot afford to lose anyone else.

J Philip, What a tragedy.  It's just a shame that we have to fear for our lives while working, isn't it?  This is just another reminder of why I need to really step up our office policy where safety is concerned.  So sad.

J. Philip, Thak you for this so needed blog. Yes, we do not want these things to happen, and they may, and office policy can't get you 100% security.

We all want justice to be served.

thank you

What a tragedy, Phil.  I just can't imagine or fathom that this was truly random.  A tragedy no matter what especially for someone with their whole life ahead.

J Philip, I was at an open house 2 weeks ago, a new development and when I tried to go in, the door was locked, so I tried to go to the other door, but it was a sea of mud. So I went back to the first door (where the sign was pointed) and knocked. A female agent opened it up and we proceeded to have a chat about the listing. It crossed my mind at the time she was probably smart to check who was coming in while she was alone there, but now I'm thinking more about her and how she was there in that empty listing all day alone...

Hi J. Philip...When something like this happens we're on our toes for a while but it doesn't take long to become complacent again.  It is awful that we live in a society where murder is so commonplace.

Phil, You have done a great job bringing this to the forefront, safety first, being aware is so important.  Stopping our busy lives for 2 minutes to remember an agent whose life has been cut short is so important.

My suggestion is to have a buddy in those open houses and what person is best suited?  Team up with a loan officer. If the client isnt pre-qualified, a proactive loan officer will have the tools available to make them.

Philip, so sorry for the loss of an agent.

Phillip, how right you are to make us all aware that we are all vulnerable and need to have a safety and security plan in place.  We tend to take too much for granted.  Thanks for the reminder.

Phil: your thoughts on this issue have been truly touching. Your comments on the safety issues are very well taken; however, I am most touched by your compassion for Ashley's friends and family. You are a true gentleman.

Continued Success!

Great advice Joe.  Like having a fire escape plan in our homes or offices.

They'll catch that guy.  With good old gum shoe police work.

We make ourselves sitting ducks.  We sit in vacant houses and meet strangers.  We'll run into the car to meet total strangers who want to see that Million Dollar listing NOW.  No commission is worth making yourself a prime target.  Having safety policies is key.

We had a Realtor murdered here a few years ago, by his Client no less in the house they were selling! I understand that the Realtor had brought his Client a purchase offer when he was murdered. They caught the murderer in Phoenix several days later.

Phil,  I am sick to my stomach.  I have been off AR the past couple of weeks because I was finishing up my GRI.  I am heartsick to learn of what happened to Ashley Oakland, may she rest in peace.   I hope they catch this guy soon.
