I had the chance today to do a good deed and boy am I walking in the clouds.
Here is the deed. My sister five years ago took my parents from their home and moved them to her small town in Georgia to help them during their time of physical and mental needs. During this time she lost her best friend and husband to cancer. She them had to put my parents in an assisted living home for their medical needs. She visited with them many days and always was the driver to the doctors.
So today her favorite author was signing books in another town 45 minutes away. She asked me if I could get her an autograph. The author was going to be signing books between 3 to 5 today. I left my office to be there about 3:30 thinking the first crowd will have already gone through. Imagine my surprise when I got there and saw only 2 cars in the parking lot. I thought this is not a good sign and it wasn't. As I got up to the door there was a flier on the door showing the author was canceled for today. I went on inside to see if I could get some information about a rescheduled time. The sales staff was talking to a customer so while they were finishing their conversation I called my sister and told her the event was canceled. She was so disappointed. I felt so bad. The one thing that I could do for her and it was canceled.
Here is the good part! When I got off the phone the sales clerk came up to me and asked if I was going to purchase one of the authors book who was suppose to being sign books today. It appears she overheard my conversation. She told me if I bought the book and told her who to dedicate the book to she would get it signed. I said ok but when could I come back to pick it up. It appeared that the author was having chest pains yesterday and cancelled the event. Today she was feeling better but did not want to see the public because she wasn't feeling her best. They told me to wait and they would be back out in just a few minutes. Sure enough the sales clerk came back with the book and autographed to my sister. The signature matched the one that was on the cover of her book! She was really there but just didn't feel well enough to see a lot of people.
I was thrilled. On the drive home I called my sister and told her the story and that I had her autographed book. She actually screamed with delight. She kept on giggling and telling me she couldn't believe it. I told her I would take a picture of her autograph and then overnight the book to her. As she hung up I heard her telling another teacher about her book.
So now the little sister is walking in the clouds. I could give my big sister, the rock of our family this little bit of pleasure.
A simple thing gives great rewards.
