Mom, What's A Kentucky Derby?

Colt and Mare in Woodbridge VA

Since horse racing is not a major legal sport in Virginia, it is not at all surprising that the colt is unaware of the significance of today's 137th running of the Kentucky Derby. Horse lovers in Prince William and the rest of Virginia necessarily concentrate on horse shows with jumping and dressage events, steeplechase, trail riding and riding for relaxation in addition to other classifications.

You may also be unaware that Virginia is generally given credit for the development of the American Quarter Horse - you thought we only reared Presidents. (8 of them to date)

While I love horses I have never owned one, but my husband and I have sold Prince William County property to people who either owned or raised them. If you want to keep a horse or livestock the minimum lot size requirement is two acres. Obviously, you need to contact the folks at Prince William County Zoning Office for more specific information regarding the requirements to own or raise horses legally in Prince William County.

There are numerous horse boarding facilities in Prince William, but Criswood Farm at 5304 Hoadly is, as far as I am aware, the largest close-in facility in eastern Prince William County. The colt above was born there - I see him/her every few days or so as I drive on Hoadly Road. The photos below were taken at several horse facilities throughout Prince William County

Karen, I think horse racing is a legal sport in VA and has been legal for over 10 years. We have a race track at Colonial Downs for Thoroughbreds ( dirt and turf) and also have Harness racing. There are also several off track betting parlors in VA. The Virginia Derby is a $600,000. Grade 2 at Colonial Downs that attracts some of the best riders and trainers in the US. Paddy O'Prado won the Virginia Derby last year with Kent Desormeaux up. The Virginia Derby is July 16th this year. The track is located just outside of Richmond in New Kent County VA.

You obviously already know that Hunter/Jumpers, Point to Point, Steeplechase, Cross Country,Dressage, Trail Riding, etc are all popular in Virginia.

Hi Karen...What a wonderful way to link the Kentucky Derby with Virginia's equestrian properties.  We are fortunate to have some very "horsey" areas in Virginia.  I have two granddaughters and a daughter-in-law that love horses so they have been part of our lives for a number of years now.  They are such beautiful animals.

Virginia is proud that Secretariat was foaled right here in Caroline County, the county next to mine.

Colonial Downs, for those interested, is off of RT. 64 heading east towards Williamsburg.

Kate  Obviously, you know more about horses than I do with two involved granddaughters.   I was pleased to be corrected about Colonial Downs

Karen, that's a great looking colt.  There are a lot of horse farms around here as well.  My home in Illinois is in a smaller subdivision across the road from a large horse farm...doubtful that any Derby material came from there though.

Derby Day seems to almost be a National Holiday. lol We have legal horse racing tracks here too. I was glued to the television watching the Derby. More of our horse farms are to our north in the Ocala area.

Karen-Virginia is proud to have been the home of Secretariat the 1973 Triple Crown Winner.  He was born and raised in Virginia at Meadow Farms in Caroline County.  I owned a couple of horses growing up stabled in Burke.   We are fortunate to still have land for horse owners in our area.

Hi Karen: I enjoyed this post and the pics! One would not guess that there was still land available in that area for raising horses, but I know you would find the right piece if it was available!

I knew Virginia was famous for its Presidents, and also for its Medal of Honor awardees. I love visiting your state, especially Monticello, and this post brought back many memories of a beautiful state. Thanks!

Karen, theses horses are such great animals.  The colt is oblivious to anything but his mother right now.  How appropriate!  Happy Mothers Day!
