Turn your headlights on when it's raining

Does your state have a law that headlights must be on if it's raining? Ohio does. It actually went into effect Jan 1, 2010. So, why do so many people still not turn on their headlights in the rain? I suppose some people just forget. It's true, you don't need them to see when it's raining. However, it helps other drivers see you!

Maybe some people are afraid they'll forget to turn the headlights off and return to a dead battery? Most newer cars will sound a warning beep if you leave the lights on, but if your car doesn't - I have the solution! I used to work in downtown Columbus and I had to park up to 6 blocks away from my office. It was dark when I left for work, so headlights were on. But when I got to work it was daylight, I couldn't see that the headlights were on and my car didn't warn me. Not fun, especially before cell phones!

My solution was simple, just move something important. I usually would use my watch, put it on my other arm. It was awkward and uncomfortable and was a constant reminder of something important. I've done this for other things I didn't want to forget, like when I would pack a lunch the night before and I didn't want to forget to get it out of the fridge the next morning. I would put my car keys in my lunch.  I guess it goes along the line of tying a string around your finger!

Now I just program reminders into my phone.

Hello Tracie! Thank goodness I drive and Acura TL that has an auto feature on the headlights. They automatically come on when I start the car and turn them off about 30 seconds after I lock it.

Alot of cars now have daylight running lights.  Saturn cars are the worse.  My car has lights that come on automatically when it gets dark.

Great idea, if we should get rain!     Does sound like a good safety piece of information.

Thanks for the comments.  We've actually been getting more than our share of rain here.  It has pretty much rained every day, with only a few exceptions, since April 1st.
