Spring in Maine this year may be a bit chilly and wet, but that hasn't stopped the annual foraging for wild green delicacies. Two local favorites have appeared in abundance this year and can be found everywhere from backyards, fields, to just along the roadside.
I'm speaking of course of fiddleheads and pissenlit (otherwise known as the humble dandelion.)
The curled up fronds of the ostrich fern are the most prized in my area and show up in produce stands, farmer's markets, and even the grocery store for those who don't wish to spend the time cleaning off the paperlike covering they start out with.
Dandelions I can get in abundance from my own yard and I agree with those featured in the Bangor Daily news article, that you need to get them before they flower. Fiddleheads for the most part I get from a nearby woodland. I've been slowly transplanting bunches of them into my yard, but don't have enough yet to get a good harvest.
Mainers will be familiar with this annual ritual, but for those "from away," today's BDN article is a great read and gives you a little glimpse into Maine life.
