Country Furniture Vancouver showcases Edible Garden author, Andrea Bellamy

Andrea Bellamy, Sugar Snaps and StrawberriesWhat does one do on a rainy, grey Saturday afternoon?  I sure needed a pick-me-up.  One of my favourite things to do is visit Country Furniture, on South Granville in Vancouver.  Ok, honestly, I really think they should re-name the furniture store "French Country Furniture", because what keeps me coming back is all the French influenced furniture and accessories.

Today was the result of receiving Country Furniture's newsletter a little while back.  The store kept advertising a local Vancouver author, Andrea Bellamy, who has recently released a book called Sugar Snaps and Strawberries.  If the title isn't enough to warm your heart, then flipping through the pages of this delightful book certainly will.  As a visual person, I really appreciate the beautiful photographs throughout this book of herbs and vegetables showcased in beautiful pots and vessels.

Sugar Snaps and Strawberries covers creating edible gardens in small spaces, such as you apartment balcony or townhouse garden.  Country Furniture - Vancouver Coop community gardens are also mentioned.  To quote the book, it's all about "simple solutions for creating your own small-space edible garden".  Now I don't know about you, but I'm really not a gardener.  I don't have indoor plants because I kill them.  However, Andrea assures me that this book is for the beginner and even hopeless cases like me can achieve some form of success.  The book is set out in simple step by step instructions to help achieve a little urban garden oasis in your urban jungle.

Now, as a Home Stager, you know I have to bring this back to home staging...  How exciting would it be to a potential buyer if on your deck you had urns full to the brim with herbs and veggies, all ready for the picking.  Talk about creating an enviable lifestyle.  As long as there's someone (Realtors...) to water the plants, this could really speak to a buyer's emotions.  With Jamie Oliver's quest to create meals incorporating what is grown in the garden (although he does confess to hiring gardeners...), wouldn't a pot of herbs speak to all those foodies out there!

The book, Sugar Snaps and Strawberries is published by Timber Press, and has been released in both Canada and the U.S.  Also, check out Andrea Bellamy's Blog, Heavy PetalEnjoy, and happy growing and cooking!

Sally- we were just discussing this with my niece and her husband.  They are newly married and have a small apartment.  He's growing avocados and wants to try basil next.  May have to find this book for them.

LOVE Jamie Oliver and his quest...I can't grow a thing either, Sally, except black dogs...always tried to do multi-purpose container gardens, but while the basil flourished, the tomatoes died...Mike is really the one with the green thumb!  Thanks for the kick in the pants - this week I have to get plants for our deck planters...maybe they'll live this year?

Okay so my urns aren't quite as beautiful, but my patio is full of herbs and vegies in the summer.  Awesome post Sally!

Kathy - I bet you can grown all sorts of exotic plants in your Florida climate.  Wouldn't it be fun to have a challenge?  Everyone plant a pot full of fruits, veggies and herbs, and we'll compare notes in a month's time!  Definitely look for the book - I really enjoyed it.

Stan - I know - can't wait to put on my gardening gloves - oh wait, I don't have any...  and start planting!  Hope houses are flying off the shelf for you, too!

Julie - It's kind of eerie how much we have in common...   I love your black dogs - so glad they're thriving.  Ok, buy the book for Mike for father's day from Rocky and Bogart, and get him to grow some stuff in a pot!  I will be expecting photos...

Laura - Oh, I shoulda known, you clever thing, you.  Hey, post some photos when everything is grown in the summer - it would be great to see.  Really, it's not how beautiful the urn is, but how great home-grown herbs, fruits and veggies will look and taste.

I've never had a green thumb, veggies or house plants.  We are giving it another try with a couple of pepper plants this year.  They are called chocolate peppers, dark brown.  I hope they don't die, I'm curious to see and taste them.

Sharon - Oh, I've got to get me some chocolate pepper seeds.  I'd love to grow chocolate peppers - bet they just melt in your mouth - do they come in the Belgian or Swiss variety?...  :-)

Fred - Yes, still checking to see that I'm all in one piece.  Oh, you busy beaver!  Those wheels of yours are always working!  Brain storming over chai tea sounds like a wonderful idea.  Love Ya Back!

David - Awww, you shouldn't have!  Really!!!  No wonder those tomatoes are bright red - the tomato plant is hung upside down?!!!  The blood must rush to their heads, poor things.  But hey, it's the thought that counts, right?...
