My Home Is Still Standing - The Aftermath of the Joplin Tornado 2011

Sunday seemed like any other day, except for the weather.  All day the humidity was high, it was a little windy, but we didn't think about tornadoes.  Working real estate all day, we came home about an hour before realizing that Joplin Missouri was Dead Tree in my front yardabout to get hit with a deadly tornado.

A call from my grandson made us turn on the weather station and wait out the storm.  We were one of the fortunate ones.....lots of wind and rain, with one large gust laying our last Bradford Pear tree over in the front yard.

We can replace and regrow the tree, but the devastation we are seeing in Joplin Missouri is unbelievable.  So many people killed, homes and businesses destroyed and about a third of the city gone.

For anyone wanting to help with the cleanup, our local Chamber of Commerce recommends not going unless we are signed up to help.  Right now, the city needs to assess the damage and get a start on the clean up.  Our local Red Cross is already there,  Least of These is requesting food for the misplaced homeowners and the Governor of Missouri has declared it a disaster area.

Doug, these storms seem so much worse than I remember.  It's the number of tornadoes in one storm that make it so severe.

John, I'm told it will take at least a year to haul all the debris away.  Unimaginable!
