As I drive through the small New England towns that I call my office during this time of year
I am all at once saddened and filled with pride as I see the amount of American Flags flying proudly from the telephone poles throughout the centers of these small communities. Recently a young visitor from Germany commented to me that it was amazing to see how many homes flew the American Flag!
Funny, I have come to think of it as common place.
And while I feel this immense surge of pride at seeing these displays at this time of year, it is a heavy reminder of those men and women who gave their lives in service to this country.
While I know and understand that this "holiday" has become the official "kick" off for the summer season, I am glad to see that these New England communities have not forgotten those that have fallen and it makes my heart swell with pride to know that the meaning of the day has survived.
I've been trying to capture the feeling of patriotism with my camera as I drive through some of these town centers, but am clearly unable to do so.
The thought remains.
