Memorial Day- " Flags In" May 26th at Arlington

Pleased to re-blog your post here, Jeff.  May we never, ever, ever forget the little flags and the individual salute each one of them receives and so richly deserves- for every one of these little ones represents a larger one that once draped a coffin of an American hero. I've actually re-blogged this a couple of times now without apology for redundancies- as we need to remember our war dead even after "flags out" begins on Tuesday...

Arlington National Cemetery honors our nation's fallen military heroes with "Flags-In" on Thursday, May 26. "Flags-In" has been conducted annually since the 3rd U.S. INF Regiment The Old Guard was designated as the Army's official ceremonial unit in 1948.

Hi, Michelle:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  Over the past 20 years or so, we Americans as a whole have done a great job in patting ourselves on the back for having "We support the troops" bumper stickers- but few can even tell you what their "support" even means.  And that's the better of us, and what proclaim as supporting those still among us.  Support for heroes gone (and long gone) has been relegated to Memorial Day, which comes Monday.  My hope is that we'll one day arrive at a time when the celebration of our heroes occurs with frequency that removes the need for those particular days' fanfare.  Have a safe weekend...

Thanks for the reblog Dennis.  I have been to Arlington National Cemetary a few times and it is always very thought provoking.  During my nine years in the Marine Corps, I constantly was reminded of those that have gone before us and can only offer my deepest respect for those men and women.  I hope you have a great Memorial Day.

Hi, Jason:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comments.  It's hard to believe 6/17 will make 16 years since I left the Navy- talk about time flying.  It's just as easy to remember the day I joined a bit more than 8 years before that, though.  I'll always do my best to try and straddle the line in being proud of my service- yet deflecting any praise others may throw my way.  I think that's the way most military folks are, though- or at least I hope so.  As you most likely know, glory seekers don't last long- and I'd dare say many we honor today would tell us that we're making way too big of a deal out of things.  I'm glad we do it, though.  Have a safe holiday, Jason, and Semper Fi.
