Amarillo, TX School News

Amarillo schools and community library have some great news this summer.  In Canyon, Texas, educators are encouraging kids to keep up their reading during the summer months.  Studies show students who read during the summer months return for a new school year at the same level or above and they are more prepared for the new school year ahead of them.  Students who don’t keep up good reading habits tend to regress and fall behind.

Lakeview Elementary is having its first summer reading program in their library.  The school was chosen because of its central location to the Amarillo and Canyon Libraries.  Some students don’t have transportation to get to those locations for their book programs.  Therefore, this school program is exciting a lot of people in the Amarillo and Canyon communities.

For the month of June and some of July, Lakeview students can attend story time in the school library.  The school hopes this will enable parents and children to read together.  If a child reads 20 minutes a day, you will see much improvement in their reading level.  This also helps create a special bond between parents and their kids.  Many parents say they read with their children for a common bond and so they will have something to talk about.  It’s a great way to open up conversations and imagination.  It’s a great learning tool for parents and children to share.

The story time schedule is as follows:

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 9:30 am - 10:00 am

Wednesday, June 29, 2011 9:30 am - 10:00 am

Thursday, July 21, 2011 9:30 am - 10:00 am

Amarillo and Canyon libraries have summer reading programs for students that do not attend Lakeview Elementary.
