Today June 14, 2011 was Flag Day and there was a Flag Retirement Ceremony set in Fairfield Glade at The First National Bank on Peavine Road. Folks were encouraged to bring their torn, tattered and faded flags to the ceremony were they would be retired of properly in a ritual that treats our flag with respect and honor.

The Crab Orchard Chapter Daughters of the American Revoluntion sponsored the ceremony today for Flag Day. Celebrating 'Old Glory' ~

"I pledge allegiance

to the flag of the

United States of America, and to the

republic for which it stands, one nation

under God, indivisible, with liberty and

justice for all."

Proper flag etiquette - for both new and old flags - is seldom practiced or even understood anymore.

It is a shame.

Hi Celeste - I have a friend who is a member of the VFW, and he asks people to let him take their old flags so that he and the VFW can perform a retirement ceremony and dispose of them with dignity and respect.  I have brought him flags from others and I appreciate the ceremony.

Thank you - Susan for sharing your experience with our flag retirement ceremonies.

Jim - You're right, I'd say most people don't even realize there is such a thing. Thanks for your comment.
