It is  Wild Raspberry season in Red Hook NY.  The first time I saw these berries I would not touch them, I didn't know what they were, so as far as I was concerned they were poisonous.  My young son on the other hand was always picking berries and I was terrified he would be poisoned, so I kept the poison control number close by.

One person told me if the birds eat the berries then it was okay for human, seem there was some truth to that statement.

I was happy to finally learn that these berries were wild raspberries and could be eaten.

So what do I do now when it is Wild Raspberry season in Red Hook NY?  I walk the perimeter of my property collecting these berries which are really very good.

Here are some of the ways I used these berries:

  • I use the berries in pancakes
  • I make wild raspberry pie
  • Use the berries in  smoothies
  • Or just eat them as I pick them

Wild Raspberry

So enjoy the Wild Raspberry season in Red Hook NY.

Louise thanks for reminding me, the wild raspberries also make a nice topping for ice-cream.

That's a great rule of thumb with the birds.  Never thought abt that.  Oh, I love picking raspberries.  We used to make all sorts of smoothies.  Very fun.

Jennifer....the last property I owned had a large area of red and black raspberries....they are actually considered vegitative wetlands by the EPA.....it's a protected area....

I know for a fact that nature made some berries good for the birds, and not us!   Do not eat any berries!    Many are poisonous, Jennifer....

Great post about a great season!   Love raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries.....

Gary it took me awhile before I tried them but they are good.

Debbie I don't know how correct the rule is, however it seems like it could work.

Barbara these will grow anywhere and I don't have wetlands. Interesting information I will have to look it up. These would grow in my front yard if I let them. I also have lots of wild strawberries.

Dagny no worries here, I still won't pick berries from outside and eat them until they are deemed safe, or until I see someone else eat them.

Oh yes, I used to pick them in another lifetime when I lived in the midwest.  Fresh-picked in the wild are the best!

Pie, did you say raspberry pie???????

Jennifer-- This brought back memories for me. We used to have wild blackberries and raspberries across the street from us in a vacant lot.  No one ever cared for them and they yielded the best crop ever. We used to pick buckets of them.  I have to buy them now!

Jennifer when I was a kid many many moons ago, we would pick them and eat them on the spot.  They never made it home for all the good things you mentioned.

Wow, those berries look so good.  There's a tree that's been dropping what looks like blackberries on the sidewalk not to far from my office.  I wonder if they're edible?  I would love to eat some fresh fruit.  Enjoy Jennifer.
