Last Minute Road Trip to Carmel

My birthday was last Thursday and my fiance surprised me with a last minute road trip to Carmel (and a Magellan Maestro GPS!).  I can sum up our trip with one word:  WOW!

It took me two days just to really relax and when I finally did we were heading back home.  Now, looking out at my neighbor's trees and fence across the street--which didn't seem so bad before I left--now looks pitiful compared to what I was feasting my eyes on for the past 3 days.

We got down there on Friday evening and I was treated to dinner at Porta Bella, right on Ocean Avenue.  If you've never been to Carmel, then you might not know that there are no addresses, as most of us know them.  For example, Porta Bella's address is Ocean Avenue, between Lincoln and Monte Verde.  We wanted to sit on the back patio (the weather was great!) but we were informed that the patio was reserved only for their guests with dogs.  (Our dogs passed away in 2005...)

The following day, we slept in with coffee service and a newspaper delivered to our door.  After walking around town, enjoying the sights and smells, I was once again treated to lunch, and another good meal, at Village Corner Bistro.  This, of course, was followed by more sights and sounds and a little shopping.

Dinner on Saturday was at Casanova.  This restaurant serves a 3 course dinner, with an all-inclusive price listed with the main course.  Again, very charming and romantic.

Breakfast yesterday, possibly the best meal of our trip, was at Terrace Grill.

On our way out of town, we stopped at the BarnYard, near the mouth of Carmel Valley.  What a beautiful "mall".  All the shops had very interesting things to offer.  There were outdoor areas with seating and fire pits, with fires burning.  Nice on a foggy day.

Everything was so beautiful and relaxed, it literally brought tears to my eyes.  And the sunsets...  Did I mention the sunsets?

Love the photo's Kelley. Carmel is one of the places I've always wanted to visit. Sounds like you had a great time.
