Atlantis lifted off on the shoulders of the Space Shuttle from Kennedy Space Center this morning.

This is her final mission.

It is the end of an era and a melancholy day for those of us here in Brevard County Florida.

We will continue the dream.

I saw the shuttle Atlantis liftoff on the news Sandy but your clips were better. Sad to see the program end for sure with no certainty of the NEXT step. A loss of capability by the Americans and PRIDE for us as a country. Beautiful clips thanks.

Hi Gary ,I had plans of heading to a friend's in Cape Canaveral to watch the shot, but there was a 70% chance of it not going due to bad weather.  So, I didn't go.  Funny, then 40 minutes prior to the launch the internet, phones and television in our area went out.  So, we had just radio. Ran outside to see the launch from my driveway, but the cloud coverage in Melbourne was so thick we didn't see anything. I was a bit disappointed.

Sandy-  we had a friend that drove up to see it.  Couldn't see it from our balcony because of the clouds... thought you might.

Kathy, There were so many people that came in to see the launch. Oh I bet you were disappointed you couldn't see it. I sure was.  I can usually see it from my driveway, but we weren't able to see anything.

Sandy, I watched your video links at 15 seconds apart and had a completely new Shuttle experience.  What an amazing trip it has been there, from Mercury launches to today, awesome memories!

I barely caught a glimpse from my backyard due to cloud coverage. It is the end of a great era!

Sandy, that is pretty amazing that you can see the launch if the weather is clear.  How far away are you from the launch center?

Were you around when they launched those massive Saturn 5A rockets for the moon shots in the late 60's and eary 70's?  How  did they compare to Shuttle launches as far as power and noise?

Hi Lou, It is a beautiful thing! But my cable TV went out and stayed out until after the liftoff.  I was disappointed.

Kevin, There are great memories associated with the launches.  I think I have seen almost everyone of them (except this one- UGH). They will live on forever.  It's what has made the Space Coast who we are today.

Gary, I know, I'm with you.  I couldn't get a glimpse of it either.  Oh, what are you going to do.

Gabe, It's really hard to believe that the program has come to an end.

Sharon and Bruce,  I am about 25 miles southwest of the launch center. On a clear day we can see it standing out in my driveway.  It's a great view (but not for this last one).  We honestly didn't think it was going to liftoff on this day.

My family moved to Deerfield Beach FL (next to Ft. Lauderdale) in 1968.  Then, in 1975 we moved up to Melbourne.  I was a kid back then, so I don't really remember that much about the launches in the 70's.

Sandy,

We saw the lift off and it was really bittersweet; so much history so many good things found from our endeavors in space. It is sad to see it come to an end!
