Crash and idiot-proof back up ---- CrashPlan vs BackBlaze?

After my laptop died, and while waiting for it to be repaired (or replaced, maybe), I was glad I had backed up my documents on to an external hard drive, my Passport external drive that I bought from Overstock.com. This one has 500 gb, even more capacity than my old laptop.

I am no longer inclined to keep documents on my laptop....but there's no guarantee my documents will be entirely safe in the external drive either. And there's got to be an easier way to restore/reintall software programs!

BACKBLAZE VS CRASHPLAN

This online review says

So who wins? It's CrashPlan on all accounts. The ability to seed the backup, combined with amazing tech support and family-friendly pricing makes it an irresistible choice for most users. However, Backblaze is a very strong second and beats Carbonite or Mozy hands down.

My techie nephew recommended CrashPlan which promotes itself as

Only CrashPlan backs up your files to local drives, other computers and online so you can get your life back should disaster strike.

How is CrashPlan different from other online backup services?

Unlike ordinary online backup, CrashPlan lets you back up to other destinations in addition to online. You can back up to your other computers, external hard drives and to computers that belong to friends and family for free.

Back it up... Fast.

If you have many gigabytes to back up over the Internet, your initial backup can take longer than you'd like. With our Seeded Backup service you can have your backup completed in a few days. We'll ship you a hard drive with instructions for backing up locally. Return shipping is included.

Still trying to understand how it works. Since iCloud isn't here yet, it's certainly worth checking out the FREE version of CrashPlan.

We researched most all the back up systems and went with CrashPlan and been with them for some time -- they seem to do a good job -- when we had a issue of connectivity we contacted them and the tech staff was right on it -- you can talk with them -- a plus. All the best.

Decided to go with CrashPlan for 30 days free trial. Would really like to have online access to documents -- and not just a handful allowed by Dropbox, etc. Want to be able to save documents online somewhere I can access them from any type of gadget, be it an iphone or an ipad or computer. That, to me is the ideal scenario instead of toting the exterhal hard drive. I don't want to save anything on my computer anymore.
