Lessons From the Coffee Shop That Does it All- Focus on Something- Find Your Niche

Today I was in a medical building here in Colorado Springs and I was so happy to see a sign in the distance that read, "Coffee Shop." I needed a fast cup of coffee! I rushed over and stood in line behind a nice elderly couple that was waiting for their burritos to be handmade. I was waiting at least five minutes without even a greeting from behind the counter.

As I was looking around, I noticed some notecards for sale. Then, I walked closer to the counter and saw a stand with jewelry for sale. Next to the jewelry was some other "junk" for sale. I also noticed this shop proclaims to make slushees, and other items as well as the burritos.

This got me thinking. How good could this coffee really be if they specialize in so many other things. It seemed more like a hodge-podge store than it did a coffee shop. When someone wants a coffee, they don't expect to wait 5 minutes while you hand make a burrito from scratch without even saying hello.

My appointment was due, so I had to leave, sadly, without a coffee.

This coffee shop that sells EVERYTHING is no different than real estate agents who service everyone and specialize in EVERYTHING. Can you really give the best service if you specialize in buyers, sellers, relocations, elderly, first-time home buyers, luxury buyers, military buyers, all areas of town and surrounding cities, short-sales, foreclosures, HUD homes, investment properties, etc...? I think you get the point.

Well, I have been very guilty of not focusing on a niche and trying to specialize in "Everything." That needs to change.

This poor lady at the coffee shop couldn't serve me today because I ran out of time waiting as she hurriedly built burritos at her coffee shop. I had to leave, but it really got me thinking- Do our clients suffer if we specialize in "Everything?"

Hi Kristi, you make me think of the Keller Williams events that I attend.  You are given so many wonderful ideas but they encourage us to choose two or three and master them.  One can not do everything.  Great post...I really enjoyed.

I agree that once you have enough experience to know what you enjoy, it's wise to specialize.

Great point, Kristi!  When you put it that way, I'm probably guilty of that as well.  Living in the small area of the Vail Valley, though, it's hard to find a 'niche'.  Something I'll think about, thanks!

Kristi, excellent points! A niche is one of the strongest "guarantees" a Realtor® can secure. Trying to be a Jack of all Trades is the wrong approach these days. Choose two or three strengths or areas and develop yourself to be the "specialist" and don't spread yourself like a pat of butter on a whole loaf of bread! Love the post!

Kristi - this is excellent!  Find a niche, stick with it, and be better at it than anyone else.  I am reading this post a while after you wrote it, but I hit the "suggest" button because this is such great advice.

Great post, Kristi!  And, great analogy for the real estate business.  I agree with you and feel the same way when I see a business that doesn't seem to specialize in anything.

"Selling everything" has always been my downfall because I love life and have so many interests. However, I also understand marketing and creating a niche, something that I've always been able to do.

Happy Tuesday!

What a great analogy. I recently started focusing my listings on expireds. The good news--you already know they want tot sell. The bad news--there's usually a reason why they haven't sold yet. But before long, I expect I'll be able to say, "I am the expired expert".

Sharon- Thanks for stopping by1

Ann- I KNOW I wear too many hats.

Russell-Having a lot of interestes is great. I would say you are a blogging expert as well!

Tammie- I am also working that niche. Here it is very competitive with expireds. I have sellers tell me they get 20 plus expired letters. It would be good to be the expert.
