Lessons From the Coffee Shop That Does it All- Focus on Something- Find Your Niche
Today I was in a medical building here in Colorado Springs and I was so happy to see a sign in the distance that read, "Coffee Shop." I needed a fast cup of coffee! I rushed over and stood in line behind a nice elderly couple that was waiting for their burritos to be handmade. I was waiting at least five minutes without even a greeting from behind the counter.
As I was looking around, I noticed some notecards for sale. Then, I walked closer to the counter and saw a stand with jewelry for sale. Next to the jewelry was some other "junk" for sale. I also noticed this shop proclaims to make slushees, and other items as well as the burritos.
This got me thinking. How good could this coffee really be if they specialize in so many other things. It seemed more like a hodge-podge store than it did a coffee shop. When someone wants a coffee, they don't expect to wait 5 minutes while you hand make a burrito from scratch without even saying hello.
My appointment was due, so I had to leave, sadly, without a coffee.
This coffee shop that sells EVERYTHING is no different than real estate agents who service everyone and specialize in EVERYTHING. Can you really give the best service if you specialize in buyers, sellers, relocations, elderly, first-time home buyers, luxury buyers, military buyers, all areas of town and surrounding cities, short-sales, foreclosures, HUD homes, investment properties, etc...? I think you get the point.
Well, I have been very guilty of not focusing on a niche and trying to specialize in "Everything." That needs to change.
This poor lady at the coffee shop couldn't serve me today because I ran out of time waiting as she hurriedly built burritos at her coffee shop. I had to leave, but it really got me thinking- Do our clients suffer if we specialize in "Everything?"
