My Unexpected Mentor

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential Calfornia Realty

Many years ago I worked in the hospitality industry as a concierge at a 5 Star Resort. This was a fun and new time in my life. All of a sudden I was attending celebrity party's, hanging out with sport stars and had the "key to my city". Attending comped diners at different restaurants was part of my job and research. I would regularly get invited backstage to concerts, art openings and put on the VIP list of chic nightclub's. Another part of my job at the hotel was to greet people on my VIP list for the day. This particular day I noted that Dr Maya Angelou was on the list and I was to arrange for her transportation to a book signing. I was very excited to meet her as I had read all of her books and had a deep respect for her work. When she came down to my desk, I have to admit I was little Star Struck. She has a profound presence in person and I was hoping that she might sign my copy of the inaugural poem she wrote for Clinton. I introduced my self and confirmed her travel plans. Then on a more personal note, I told her how I was a fan of her work and tried to maintain some professionalism as I was still at work. This was an emotional time for me and Maya picked up on my sensitive feelings. After that she reached out her hand to shake mine and with a generous smile said. " Hold my hand and just be with me" I instantly felt all of her love and kind energy flowing through our handshake. It was a moment that I will always treasure. She is a mentor not only to me but many others. I figured if Oprah says Maya is her mentor, then she good enough for me as well! :)
