Last night I was lucky enough to attend the "soft-opening" of LULU California Bistro in Downtown Palm Springs and it was a hit. From every angle, each element of execution from the architecture to the menu of this eating establishment is superb. Here's a quick rundown and some photos.
First the decor was modern, bright and well-lit. The 3 levels all give you a different perspective and feel (we were on the mezzanine level) and they have taken great care with lighting and acoustics.
The menu? Yes its big but such a great assortment. If you know Aqua Pazza, you know this menu. Large portions and great recipes properly cooked and presented.
My partner had the Organic Mixed Field Greens salad ( with cherry tomatoes and oranges, topped with won-tons, served with an orange vinaigrette) followed by Pan sautéed Rigatoni in meat sauce (similar to a Bolognese) ever so slightly creamed and a good balance of sauce to meat. He was well satisfied and thought it was all very well prepared.
I started with the Pear and Bleu Cheese Salad (pear poached in red wine & balsamic vinegar) with mixed greens, bleu cheese and walnuts, served with a pear vinaigrette. Again perfect presentation with just enough dressing. My dinner consisted of two sides: Linguine Checca with diced Roma tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil and a perfectly done Eggplant Parmigiano light with great fresh tomato sauce and not over-burdened with cheese.
Note that we chose Pasta last night as we had to limit the menu choices some how but rest assured that there is plenty of seafood, salads, pizza, sandwiches, burgers and Panini. Something for every hunger. Do beware, the portions are large and my two "sides" were more than enough food. Regular size entrees are split if desired.
The staff is well-trained and learning the new environment well. Willie Rhine, the General Manager who was generous enough to extend the invitation to us last night greeted us and extended a warm welcome.
Is there any doubt that with LULU, ZIN American Bistro and Kaiser (the latter two undergoing renovation now) we have a stronger downtown restaurant presence. And that flow clear into Uptown as well with Jakes, Trio, Tropicale, Al Dente and many more.
