Why We Chose Real Estate - Moving to the Mountains!

By
Real Estate Agent with Murphy and Hayesville, NC; Hiawassee, Blairsville, Blue Ridge GA

Sometimes it takes half your lifetime to find the right profession and place to live, work and play. I grew up in Homestead, Florida but my Grandparents had a summer home in the cool mountains in the small town of Burnsville, NC. This is where we spent all our suCarol Lee McKenzie - Homestead, FLmmers and most of that time was spent down in the Cattail Creek that flowed right outside the home. Those summers continued as I became an adult and it was on a December vacation up to Burnsville that I first saw snow on Christmas Day.

Lee & Carol Barbour 1987 WeddingFast forward to meeting the most patient, caring and funniest person I know, my husband Lee. We lived in North Miami Beach, FL where Lee worked in the film industry as a Grip for commercials and movies and I in downtown Miami as a graphic designer. Then we had our son, Brandon Lee, and every vacation and long holiday weekend we were headed to the mountains. Our plan was to build a home to vacation at and then retire there, but Miami was getting too crowded for us so in 1997 we decided to sell our beautiful land in Burnsville. After deciding we needed to move to a more prosperous city to live and work full time in we chose Murphy, NC to be our new home.

Lee worked with a land developer and I worked as the office manager at a local real estate office. We both agree that moving to the mountains and living in Murphy, NC was the best decision we’d ever made and that our only regret in moving was that we didn’t do it sooner!

So why did we choose real estate? We loved working together and we truly do compliment each other and make a great team. We understood how different The Barbour Family at Hiwassee River in Murphy, NCit was moving from a city like Miami to a smaller town and all the questions buyers have. We don’t have “cookie-cutter” neighborhoods and everything is spread out with lots of mountains, valleys, creeks, rivers and lakes around you  - not to mention four seasons. Most things here are very different than living in a larger city. We wanted to partner with clients making their searching, buying and living in the mountains experience one that they would say was the best decision they’d made too. So a few years later, we both got our NC, GA and TN real estate license and became the Mountain Living Team. We love living here in Murphy, NC and can’t imagine doing anything else other than real estate.

Lee & Carol, my hubby has recently joined me in my practice, as the marketing director and it is already improving both the business and our home life, as it gives us more time together AND more time off (to play together). We seem to get more done in less time working this way. It is so great to be able to work with the one you love. Keep up the team work.

Can you imagine never seeing snow until you were an adult? Having four mild seasons to enjoy is on of the things that draws people to our are too, Mike. I will say though that Fall is my favorite and its right around the corner!

Oh, you know it Elva. I think it really gives us an advantage in work and home life. We both have gifts and strengths that blend together which benefits our Clients. It is a great opportunity to be able to work with the one you love...and I try not to drive Lee crazy too much :)

Thanks Connie! We are right on the border of Tennessee and my brother  and his family are just about 90 minutes in Clahoun, TN from us. It is gorgeous there too. Hey, we were just in Nashville, TN for a Coldwell Banker Rally and we loved the downtown area.
