"Books for the World"
Nev, a native of South Africa, has been affiliated with Rotary for 28 years with perfect attendance.
He is currently with the Anaheim Rotary Club where he has been president on several occasions.
Today he comes to us to discuss a project that distributes donated books and material to regions
desperately lacking in educational resources.
Here's How it Works:
1. Rotary members in Southern California and clubs nationwide collect gently-used and often
new books from schools, libraries, churches and individuals.
2. Volunteers pack the books for shipment over seas in containers which are then sent to
Texas for containerization and ocean transport to recipient regions in Southern Africa and
India. Once containers arrive at their location they can be reused as classrooms, libraries,
or medical clinics.
3. Rotarians in the recipient areas prescreen and deliver the books
30,000-50,000 books are shipped per month in 4x40 foot containers.
The cost to ship a pallet is about $250 and each pallet contains about 700 books.
What can we do as a club? This is a very simple project that requires member to either
bring in old, new or gently-used books for the club to collect and bring to Nev Roseman.
If you have old encyclopedias, school text books, childrens books, college or graduate school books, desks, chairs, school supplies, blankets or toys we can arrange to pick them up at your
home.
This project can satisfy vocational, community service, International and New Generation areas of
service. Where Interact, elementary and middle school aged children can donate and collect
books.
