Fear Is One Step Away From Courage

Tom Arstingstall has a great post about Courage, actually.  Making fear work for you rather than against you has always been my modus operandi.

Tom has a great photo for some of you who have taken those survivor courses, too.

Have you ever stood still in fear of not knowing what to do? Afraid of what may happen, not knowing what is ahead if you move forward, and unsure what the future holds. It is a paralyzing experience.

Fear and Courage can not exist at the same time.

Moving from fear and into courage requires action. Taking that first small step into the unknown. Think of crossing a swinging bridge, suspended high in the air. You want to get to the other side but you are afraid. You can begin by taking that first small step onto the bridge, hands grasping the rope, feet safely within the planks. That wasn't so bad.

That is the beginning of the journey, that first small step. Having succeeded, you take the next step making progress though it may be a little more wobbly. Still just a beginning but successfully moving toward the goal. One step after the other down the center of the planks suspended over the void. Soon you find that your journey has progressed well beyond where you thought you were capable of doing.

The fear has lessened though you are far from the safe beginning platform. Swaying back and forth, far from the safe region, you are okay. A series of successful steps has made the situation bearable. You can move with the bridge, feet firmly in place, the grip just for balance. By moving forward you have moved from fear, toward courage. The action of taking that first step, and getting closer to your goal, brings courage.

You can now cross this bridge. Moving slowly at first, you are free to complete the journey. Experience has shown us that facing this fear can eliminate it. you have done what you have wanted to do, cross the bridge. With this experience we can now see more bridges that we would like to cross. Each may seem bigger at first, but based on what we have learned, it can be accomplished with courage and taking that first small step.

Enjoy this day!
