Last Saturday, August 20th, John and Karin Koons opened the doors, for the first time, at Johnny's Donuts. I was born about five blocks from the shop and this is a great neighborhood in which to have a donut shop. The neighbors have been very supportive of the new venture and they are enthusiastic about the donuts.
Johnny's Donuts is at 2201 Cornwall Avenue, just down the street from two landmarks -- Bellingham High School and the Assumption Church. The shop is open 7AM to 3PM every day, except Monday.
Johnny's Donuts is an old-fashioned shop. John prepares 30 varieties of donuts and related pastries. When you step inside the door, Karin will greet you with a smile and guide you through the display of tantalizing taste treats of the day. This is a real mom and pop donut shop and the Koon's are proud of that.
In the back, simply to keep up with the demand, you are likely to see John working away creating more pastries so the front cases can be replenished on an ongoing basis. John has the art of making donuts down. He began his career with donuts as a teenager in the 1960's and, since that time, John has owned two other successful donut shops in Whatcom County.
The local newspaper, the Bellingham Herald, wrote an article on Johnny's Donuts today and the town had heard the news loud and clear -- the parking lot was packed with people coming by to sample the donuts. One car would leave, and two more would pull into the parking lot. There was a steady stream of customers.
In fact, there was such a run on the shop this morning, an abundance of eager customers, that John had to stay busy in the back so they could stay current with customer demand. Serious work was required, on the part of Johnny, simply to keep the cases full of pastries.
The people in the neighborhood are very happy to see this family friendly shop move into what had been a long vacant building. Below is a photo that is representative of the day they had today at Johnny's Donuts -- a neighbor carefully picking out the donuts he wants, while Karin bags them. And, do you really need to ask, of course Johnny's Donuts will give you the traditional baker's dozen when you buy twelve donuts.
Everyone who samples Johnny's Donuts goes home happy. If you live in Bellingham, or any part of Whatcom County, then check out Johnny's Donuts for an old-fashioned and tasty pastry treat. You will be glad that you did.
These donuts taste so light, fluffy and good that they just have to be good for you! Of that I am sure.
