"Los Angeles County Fire Department officials Wednesday warned residents about a possible scam involving carbon monoxide detectors.

One company has solicited locals through the mail to buy a $126 carbon monoxide detector and stated residents could face fines and penalties under California's Senate Bill 183 if they didn't the purchase the item, county officials said.

But while the bill does mandate carbon monoxide detectors in single-family homes, no federal, state or local fire agency is backing a particular brand of detector, said Los Angeles County fire Inspector Matt Levesque." - Jacqueline Howard on Patch.com

Approved detectors are available for around $20-30 from hardware stores and online vendors.  Here is the LA County Fire Department's frequently asked questions about the new law which as of July 1 applies to all homes with attached garages or fuel burning appliances. CO or Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas produced by fire combustion.

From a home sales/rental perspective, we now include a notice of the new law in the Transfer Disclosure Statement from a seller in a standard home sale and landlord signoff on a notice of the new law in lease contracts.
