We had a few days of rain last week but nowhere near enough to make a difference.  Here are some more tidbits and tips for saving water.  This 3rd and final post will concentrate on conserving water in the yard and garden.

Water usage tidbit - Outdoors.
Did you know that you might use up to 500 gallons of water when you run your sprinklers for 2 hours?

The soil will retain more water if you let it grow taller - up to 3 inches.

Most of North Georgia, including Roswell, is under strict outdoor water bans.  Be sure to check your area's government pages to check what those bans might be.  They are sure to vary depending on where you live.
So don't water if you're not allowed to.

Don't water your lawn unless it really needs it.
How do you know if your yard needs water?  If you step on the lawn and the grass stays flat when you lift your foot, your lawn needs water.  If it springs back, the lawn is OK.

Water early in the day.
Watering in the morning reduces water evaporation and helps prevent the growth of fungus.  It also safeguards against garden critters such as slugs.  Water your lawn long enough to soak down to the roots.  If you put an empty tuna can on the lawn when you're watering, you'll know you've watered enough when it gets full.

Make sure you are only watering grass and plants.
Make sure you point your sprinklers so that the water hits your lawn and garden - not your walkways and your house! It's also suggested that you do not water when it is windy because the wind can speed up evaporation.

Landscape with the thought of saving water.
There are many plants and shrubs that need less water than others do.  Check with your local garden shops to see what types of drought resistant plants are available in your area.  You can also use mulch.  It will hold the moisture in the soil while keeping weeds at bay at the same time.

Other outdoor water saving tips:

  • When washing the car - use the hose only to rinse.  Fill up a bucket with soapy water to wash.
  • Do not use a hose to clean your driveway or sidewalks.  Use a broom instead.
  • And as you did for the inside of the house, check for leaks in pipes, hoses, and faucets on the outside.

Here's something that I found an ad for while searching for these tips.   It's waterless car wash solution.

I hope you all benefited from these tips

I was just in Atlanta last week and the hotel W was encouraging that we conserve water...I was impressed with them for their proactive attitude.

Hi Nancy,

How about we do something healthy and conserve water. Let's eat the mussels. Then we will not have to water them

Sam -
I'm glad to hear that the hotels are trying to conserve!  How'd you like here in the ATL?

Smothered in butter & garlic, tossed in some bread crumbs and stuck in a mushroom cap.   YUM-O!
Not sure how healthy that would be, though.  haha
