You really never know what to expect down here in the Florida Keys! Fantasy Fest, of course, is pretty predictable, but always amazing. It seems that, at last weeks event, I saw more than the usual number of folks, from their teens on up, of both sexes (and in-between) wandering Duval Street in a glorious state of body-painted undress. People were simply here to have fun, and they did!! Crazy!
Then, there's the news this morning that some guy, known as the PIZZA PILOT, is back in trouble again. In 2001, after a little bit of flight instruction, he stole an airplane in Marathon and flew to Cuba to deliver a Pizza Hut pizza to Fidel Castro in an attempt to kidnap him. The PIZZA PILOT was foiled in his gallant endeavor, however, when he crash-landed on a beach in Cuba and was returned to the U.S., whereupon he was sentenced to six months in the pokey. Crazy!
Then there's the stream of Cuban boat-people. Before I moved here and would ocassionally see in the news about Cuban refugees landing, I thought that was a really BIG DEAL! Ha, it is almost a weekly event. The way it works is that, if they actually make it to land, they are taken into custody and allowed to stay in our country after some processing. If they do not make it to land, such as being stranded on a bridge support on the Seven Mile Bridge (as recently happened), they are deported to Cuba. About six months ago, a group of refugees actually came ashore on the beach on the Naval Air Station Base right directly in front of the home of the Commanding Office of the Key West Naval Air Station. Crazy!
