Are You Stepping On My Toe?

By

There was recently a blog calling for stripping a non real estate content of points on AR. It was featured, and like everything on AR, had a sizable thread with “I agree” comments. I could not believe people would be taking it seriously, but then “I agree” comment in large quantity is rarely a sign of seriousness.

To be fair there were critical comments. And not just a few. The idea deserved much stronger words, than those that were used, but the author still did not like it very much, so he fired another blog post, also featured, this time with even more of “I agree” comments.

Here is what the blogger said:

“The only way to have a rational discussion about a topic with two or more opposing sides is that we all:

·        be willing to listen

·        keep emotions out of the discussion

·        be respectful of others opinions

·        really read the article and comments”

I am totally puzzled by this. Why on earth should I read something to the very end, when I am pissed after reading just the first paragraph?

Are you stepping on my toe?Why would someone seriously expect me to do it? Reading to the end is not my obligation. If I do not read to the very end, this may not only be about me, this might as well be about you.

And if you step on my toes in the first paragraph, I will scream right there, and not after reading the whole thing and getting to the end.

It is up to the author how you write, it is up to the reader how we read. And it is up to us how we comment. You can delete my comment, and I can click another blog and not read yours, so there are a lot of options for all of us.

And if you choose to shock me, well, then why cry foul, when I am shocked? It may not be a PC reaction, but this is sure a normal reaction.

I do not understand when a blogger admits writing “a blog that is deliberately controversial” and then the same blogger is surprised that people react to that without first reading it all, and then thinking about it all, and then coming back with a serious response.

And why serious is required in response to controversial? Controversial is … just controversial, does not mean that it is serious. It is often not a result of a thought process but more a cheap popularity contest…

Are you stepping on my toe?

Cause I would scream…

Jon - I like your post, glad I missed the reason for your post.  People seem to really try to come up with some interesting topics for comments... and I agree with you :)  I have often read a post and if I cannot think of something to say, I move on!

I can't remember whether or not I read those two posts. I think I remember seeing them, and I think I did comment on the first one, but any more than that simply wasn't worth my time and effort.

By the way, I quit reading your post when I got to the vulgarity.

Kym - that is not the problem, The problem is that even when people would have disagreed, if they thought about it, say "I agree". Maybe they were not thinking...

Lora - I would not write this if not for his second blog. I could not get it when an adult would write to steer the pot, and then complain that he achieved his goal.

Can I agree and disagree?

I think that if you are going to comment, then you really should read the whole thing. Some writers get a bit mixed up, and what they really meant doesn't come through in the first couple of sentences. So those who comment without reading the rest are sometimes saying they disagree when they really do agree - or the other way around.

Now I think I'm the one not making any sense, so I'll stop here.

But yes - if you're trying to stir up a controversy for the sake of getting plenty of comments (or a feature), then you'd better be ready to get comments that disagree.

wish there was a link - don't know which blogs you are talking about.  there is a lt of non thinking posts, "I agree" and while people are entitled to post what they want it is annoying because I would prefer real comments which have been thought about - it is just the way it is.  Cute graphic and love your posts....

Marte - I see in blogging culture that we often comment not necessarily to the whole comment, but to a certain statement there.

Take Bob Stewart's random thoughts. All comments are to one paragraph out of a a bunch of those.

Miriam - actually, his second post was fine if you did not read the first one. For me the first was fine for as long as the author could handle the critique.

His problem was that he did not like critique. Well, don't piss off people, if you do not want their angry reaction.

But demanding the right to piss people off, but telling them to be quiet was ridiculous

Comments and feedback are welcome!

I would like your opinion of how this was handled?

Did I do the right thing?

AND then when they get lambasted they close comments, delete comments and get defensive!?!?!?!?

Than - it was even more interesting recently, when the guy wrote a post and he was so wrong, it was hard to believe he did not understand right from wrong. And, of course, he was featured.

So the comments started coming and they practically all were "No, this is wrong"

And then somebody wrote a post saying that members stoned a member.

How? Just by saying what they thought, which was the sme for regular folks?

Jon,

I had to say that.

I don't like the point system, but I admire it's shear brilance and what it has done for all of us.

I joined two groups the same day both had 10,000 members, more or less. Today Active Rain has well over 200,000 and the other 15,000. It's those points for pretsipation that gave us such a group!

I too, believed that points should be for content and use to resent points for garbage and evil. The features bothered even more!

But, the only thing the points and even the features do is encourage perception!

I don't worry about points, I worry about who reads my post. It means allot to me that more than half the top 50 bloggers read my work at least part of the time. It's not about how many people, it's about who your readers are!

I never miss your work, I comment when it's eductional or personal.

Your article makes sense to me. If I can't make it thorugh the entire article maybe it's because I don't need to. My choice completely. I did make it through yours though :)

Bill - I also feel uneasy about points, but I agree that this was a work of genius (and I think it is gone with Jon Washburn's departure).

It just would not go anywhere if not for points. Yes, we all smile, yes , we are adults, but the point system btought the level of activity b y memberss, which would not be even conceivable if not for the brilliant point system.

And, I owe you tremendously for your support

Jon I missed those 2 blogs. I  Never pay attention to anything having to do with how points should be allocated or to bloggers who have the idea, their idea of what should be blogged about is the right way.  I read your entire post though.
